The XDs and XDM series pistols aren't bad at all. They're reliable and accurate. They have a grip safety, so a lot of people like them as being "more safe" than, say, the Glocks. Unlike the Glock they're more of a true single action than a "safe action", so their trigger pull has a shorter travel with less take-up; but are spongy IMHO. So, from that standpoint I think they're fine guns and they've given good service to a lot of people. That said, I'm not a fan, but that's just because they don't fit my hand very well or point naturally for me. I'd say try to handle one and see how if fits you; if it feels good in your hand it should give you good service.
Have such points changed for yourself since the release of the upgraded 2.0 models with supposedly enhanced ergonomics?
Either would be a good choice. I like the VP9 quite a bit; very accurate pistol. To be honest I haven't handled the 2.0 series extensively; but the one I did handle didn't really feel all that different to me. Admittedly, that might just have been preexisting bias leaking through if I were to be completely honest.
I think I’m leaning towards the VP9 especialy since I’m a southpaw so the ambidextrous mag and slide release fits what I need.
I carry an XDS 45 pretty frequently. For a compact 45acp, there is surprisingly little recoil. The mag extension for the standard mag is essential. Allows the entire hand to be able to grip the gun.
I'm sorry you don't like the fact some LEOs don't toe the leftist line on gun control. I guess that's what happens when some of them are elected.
