Even if some minor lines were crossed in obtaining that FISA warrant, the fact is that the FBI, NSA, and CIA had Page under surveillance since December 2013, for very good reasons. This was not a new warrant, but a continuation request.

"Page was the subject of a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant in 2014, at least two years earlier than was indicated in the stories concerning his role in the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald Trump. 2017 news accounts about the warrant indicated it was granted because of Page's ties to Buryakov, Podobnyy, and the third Russian who attempted to recruit him, Igor Sporyshev."

The Trump campaign disowned him because of the possible controversy:

The term "main stream" is used for a reason. Most of us are centrists, not extremists towards either side. We tend to watch and read information sources that have verifiable reputations for journalistic integrity.

and the first reaction his has is to run to WaPo and tell them..
it is a highly illegal leak... of extremely top secret material.. pertinent to an ongoing criminal probe...which has not yet culminated in a charge... and is being levied at the potential defendant... it is a gross miscarriage of justice on every level..
