There is no reason they'd have to take credit for it. If they launch ICBMs from their country than we'd know, and retaliate. But they could just put a nuke on an unmarked Tuna boat with some suicide bombers and sail as close to New York as they can before detonating. Since we don't know who it is, are we going to just nuke everybody we don't like that has nukes? They could also use a nuke against a military target, or just use it as a threat while rolling out conventional forces or going much more overt in their support or terrorist attacks. Their government really does lead chants of "death to America" we've got a lot of bad blood with them from the cold war (the issue with Israel is newer and I suspect we'd have much the same situation with Iran even if Israel didn't exist, some people just wouldn't be able to deflect the issue as much.) And we didn't want a lot of those other countries to get nukes either, but the threat from Iran, and our ability to do something about it, are on a different level in this particular situation. I'm given to understand every time that Iran's pool of clients shrinks China at least starts renegotiating prices. So sanctions are at least doing something...but maybe nowhere near enough. Personally I really wish we could somehow get Iran to give up enrichment through diplomacy. Personally I doubt the US will declare war on Iran exactly. We'd probably need some real nuke evidence. Rather we'll keep at them and provoke them into doing something giving us a legal war to fight. Or Israel will do something, Iran will carry out its promise to fire missiles on US facilities, and then we'll have our defensive war.
Iran is not threatening anyone. Israel's problem is their country is too small to survive without financial and military aid from the United States. Israel doesn't have enough land, or enough water to support a growing population. And they don't have any of the region's oil. They want all of those things, but they won't have it so long as Iran is there. Israel can't take Iran on their own, and America can't do it for them either. It's too dangerous. Israel is a big fail.
If that were the truth, Israel would have claimed Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria while the U.S. had troops on the ground in Iraq, providing a buffer from Iran. They don't even know how to deal with the muslim population of the occupied territories, much less millions more. The idea of Greater Israel is a big fail. The idea of assimilation through settlement growth is a fail.
War with Iran is not only insane, it is entirely immoral, in fact it would be the "supreme crime of aggression", in the same way the Nazis' acts were described.
If they beg us for our help not doing so could be considered a supreme crime of inaction and neglect.
