Debating, what's it all about? https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9D_91S3DJDQ "Debating is about grandstanding an idea, rather than arriving at an actual solution."
There is formal and informal debate. A forum such as this is generally a formal debate. An informal debate is an exchange of ideas with a dose of lazy thought processes and arguments. A formal debate is an exchange of ideas where all debaters are required to respect both affirmative and non-affirmative positions. The Lincoln-Douglas debate style is a type of formal debate.
But what comes of either style, does either have an outcome where the idea is met and a solution obtained? Or is it a case of, "mine's bigger than yours" mentality?
Informal debates provide a wide variety of comments. Some here try to do the "gotcha" arguments or use juvenile antics, but some do try to convey their points on said topic. The difficulty is each poster has to sift through all posts and decide which ones to respond to or even read. However, in a formal debate, a topic or question is determined and sides are chosen. The exchange of ideas is done through logical arguments.
So when we have presidential candidate debates, what goes on there? More like an insult-fest rather than resolutions for problems. As you put it, they also do "gotcha" moments and "juvenile antics". Wouldn't you agree?
Presidential debates are generally informal. However, in the old days, presidential debates used to discuss policy differences mixed with occasional barbs. Not today, especially with the GOP using the blame game, name calling, and very little policy discussion. So with GOP candidates, I would suggest waiting or reading on their campaign websites on what they propose to do. And the more detail, the better.
yep, at least for Presidential debates. When my state had a governor's debate in 2022, there was more decorum among the candidates than in the 2020 Presidential debates.
Do you think those political debates would learn anything from platforms such as this, or we from them, or is it no contest?
~ Yes. Grandstanding for entertainment / ratings value. Today it's all "fake politics ". We the people never actually know what our elected officials are going to do until they actually do it. They all work for themselves, their party, power, and money.
Indeed. The narratives and agendas are skewed in such a way to suck most of the gullible up. Once they're in steering the ship, anticipate an awful ride. As what was promised is thrown out the door and most of the voters have that bewildered look on their faces of, "I didn't sign up for that" or, "I didn't vote for them to get that". Both looks have the appearance of "just screwed the neighbours pooch" about them.
Good points. College debate classes in the 60s were usually formal debates. What happens online is not a debate, but a discussion.
Yes. They are worth watching. Of course Bribed Joe won't be in any shape to debate next year. I think that Trump and RFK should debate without him if he fails to show.
