I finally found an explanation for Islamic jihad that makes sense. Although David Wood is an evangelical Christian (I'm an atheist) his knowledge of and intelligence concerning Islam and jihad is excellent. This video is well done as are many others by him: In short, belief in Islam, knowledge of it's commands to fight infidels, and a commitment to obey those commands leads some muslims to become jihadists.
99% of you people in this forum are atheists. I find it ironic that a group of people who supposedly do not care about religion spend so much time here debating those of us who do. As to your OP, I will just say.....we already know this.
You are on a political forum and pretty much everyone here knows about Jihad. Perhaps if you phrased a question for us to discuss it would be a more useful discussion. Not sure what you want to discuss with this.
I'm presenting a theory that I KNOW many are uninformed about and many will disagree with. You agree with it? Fine. Others will not. I expect them to debate me. Others will join my side and debate them. That's what happens on this forum. Just sit back and watch.
Out of context commands are out of context. Yes, what you say above is true but incomplete. You avoid the fact that there are clear commands to fight those who DO NOT fight them (there are specific commands to fight UNBELIEVERS, not attackers). You also fail to place attacks against muslims into any context. Some attacks against some muslims may be justified. Muslims are not perfect and many of them present a clear security threat. - - - Updated - - - Are you saying no one will disagree? Are there not muslims and muslim sympathizers here?
Not many but even those that are here know the parts of the Koran that authorize Jihad. There is nothing to debate here.
There are 109 verses in the Quran calling for some form of violent jihad. The obvious ones are 9:5, 9:29 and 9:73.
I think you underestimate the number of people who disagree. One muslim is debating me on this as we speak. There will be others, both muslim and non muslim, who will do so also.
The Qur'an has to be read according to the historical context the verses were revealed in. Surah 9 refers to war against the Meccan pagans, who persecuted the Muslims for 13 years, and broke a peace treaty with the Muslims. From the same surah: 9:4- "Excepted are those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists and then they have not been deficient toward you in anything or supported anyone against you; so complete for them their treaty until their term [has ended]. Indeed, God loves the righteous [who fear Him]." 9:13- "Will you not fight a people who have violated their oaths (pagans of Makkah) and intended to expel the Messenger, while they did attack you first? Do you fear them? God has more right that you should fear Him, if you are believers."
What has caused the Sunni, Shia split to appear to be so prevalent now, if indeed you think that is what is going on.
Yeah, kind of strange that atheist would care so much about religion. But it does seem that atheist like any religious zealot is intent on trying to force their views about religion or non-religion on others.
Probably just the belief one is right the and the other wrong. How many wars have been fought between Catholics and Protestants? A whole bunch. So why not Islam too.
NYT shows that Muslims are 25 times more likely kill in the name of their religion: 2% of the population accounts for 50% of the fatalities in terror attacks. And that after cherry picking the states to start in 2002 rather than 2001. We certainly don't want to add any more to this population without a national need and extremely careful clearing of any association with Jihad or Jihadists.
The irony is so thick... you know the drill. The persecution of non religious people by religions is a common historical and contemporary occurrence but for some reason you seem to want to complain about atheists trying to force their views about religion or non-religion on others. Where are the atheists in congress or the White House establishing atheism by law? You still have your churches, synagogues and mosques. You still have the freedom to exercise your religion thanks to respect for the 1st Amendment. We are a secular republic, not an atheist one.
I think all you have to do is read the posts on the site and you will notice how Atheist are attempting to force their views upon others.
Actually no one can force their views on anyone here. If that's the case then everyone is forcing their views on everyone here. You can choose not read posts on an internet forum, correct? Congress hasn't passed any laws making you read anything yet have they?
I guess people who commit bloody massacres have feelings, too "This is so dumb. If we want to fight terrorism, not helpful to assume all terrorists are inhuman & emotionless." https://twitter.com/JillFilipovic/status/672910486548160512 When it comes to coming together to protect ourselves, these folks are worthless. She is cute though:
(Insert name here) calls on (insert name here) to fight those who fight them. The rest is history.... America calls on Americans to fight those who fight them. The rest is history....
Just as some Christians try to force their views on those who do not agree with them. Ironically, from my perspective most if not all groups claim to be oppressed. I know of no society where some group is not rightly screaming oppression. In a free/ish society many groups feel oppressed to varying degrees.
