This Tuesday is our national election as everyone knows. Some are saying that if our current president wins are country as we know it will end. Others are claiming that it is the opposition who will bring us to ruin. The fact is regardless who wins the peoples bid this country is not doomed. We are not swirling around the drain. Not yet. This nation is indeed in danger of losing its principals, its freedoms. We have turned politics into sports. Into insults and trash talking. Civility and honesty have been pushed to the side in favor of talking points and cheap pot shots. Almost everyone champions the letter of their registered party without thought. They can do no wrong. That all of the problems can be traced back to the other side. That's the given impression anyway. Truth is it is not our leaders faults for us being in the shape that we're in. Not fully anyway. The majority of it falls on us. It's with the way we treat others. We are so focused on scoring points and poking fun at the other team that we've lost sight on what's important. Integrity. Honesty. Accountability for everyone of our leaders, not just those we don't like. Our immaturity is what is responsible for our problems. If we only dicussed things openly, honestly, and most importantly respectfully then we would be able to see our canidates for who they are. We would demand actual leadership and stop with the career politicians. We would see petty mudslinging and soundbites for what they are. As it is this is the legacy that we are leaving our children. They are the ones who will see our behavior as acceptable. They will inherit the same intolerance opposing anyone who thinks differently. What we fail to realize is that differing thoughts and beliefs is this nations strength. Its salvation. It's what prevents us from going to far in one direction or the other. Instead of embracing this however everyone shuns anything that looks or sounds different. I'm not an elegent speaker. I don't expect to really move or effect people with these words. Regardless of who our president is going to be for the next 4 years I will praise him when praise is due, call him out on his bs, and not fight over petty little things that take away from the larger issues. We need honesty and integrity on our part if we ever hope see it from our leaders. America will never be perfect but the direction she goes in depends soley on us, not congress. What do you want America to be known for?
Nicely put. I appreciate both the message and the clear format- paragraphs, complete sentences, punctuation, correct use of Capitalization- I just want to give a shout out here to a post that is readable.
That's nicely put. I was going to post with a simple answer of "ahead" Regardless of who wins tomorrow, I'm sadly expecting four more years of the same. Neither winner will actually reach across the aisle, and if they do, the opposition will not reach back.
The courage to speak truth to power. I think that's what we need to develop next. It should become our new national pastime.
But that's the thing, it doesn't just fall on them. We have to step up and act like real adults. People are going to be more likely to listen and work with you when you actually show common courtesy and maturity. I'm not going to take anyone serious that is calling me names or accusing of thinking or being a certainy way. Their's no credibility in that. Change has to start with us. It's cliche I know, but it's truth. It's the only way we can hope to improve anything.
