Many years ago, I went to a flea market with some friends and there was a guy selling tv sets. My friends decided to out me and laughed because I didn't own a television and had no interest in owning one. The vendor got ticked off and went off on me exclaiming that I was snobby and thought I was better than other people, blah, blah, blah. I don't know why he was so personally offended, but I laughed it off.

I can tell you the last time I watched television (other than reruns). It was the day they found Susan Smith's car in the lake/river with her two babies drowned. I knew her story made no sense because car jackers don't kidnap kids and kidnappers usually have their own mode of transportation. I was devastated and never watched the news since.

I figured that BIG news would spread through the office or neighborhood and I didn't need to know the details of whatever new tragedies were filling the airwaves. With the invent of the internet, it's hard to avoid the bombardment but I make a valiant attempt every day. Life is too short to have 24/7 negativity streaming from all directions.

And, you are correct. What passes as "entertainment" these days is disgusting. It still boggles my mind how someone can propel themselves into fame by releasing a sex tape. Less than a century ago, thespians had to sign morality clauses and that kind of public behavior was deeply frowned upon. Then, again, I know people that actually subscribe to the National Enquirer. <eye roll>

Funny...while watching Jeopardy tonight there were nine commercials that had white men in them.

I was just reminded of a story I saw a month ago about how few white people will be cast in movies going forward. If current commercials are an omen, then it's probably true.

This forum has become one thread after the other of race bating.

It's like that's all Trumpers have...

I was watching a tv series called “cursed”. It’s a take on the Arthur legend. Arthur and lady Morgana are both black. Wouldn’t that count as cultural appropriation? Or is that only possible if black people are offended?

The show wasn’t that bad, but it is soooo annoying that they are so over the top with their ridiculous “inclusiveness” or whatever they call it these days.

Why would a commercial targeting a specific state, or even nation, need to be 'globally' representative? Shouldn't it represent the reality of the target audience?

More to the point, casting white males as essential buffoons is not representative of any reality. That's exactly the kind of sexism/racism which historically cast black males as NPC sidekicks, but at least that was grounded in the reality of the times.

Yes, and I don't even live in America. White males in commercials are virtually always bad/stupid/ineffectual. The 'strong' males we see now are POC .. and they're always angelic and wonderfully capable. The semi-okay white male is obese. That makes him less toxic, apparently (thinness is hate).

Upshot .. no fit looking white males in husband/father roles.

I suppose they wouldn't need to be. Admittedly, I don't watch television all that often so my exposure to most commercials are online. Again, though, I haven't seen a marked decrease in white males being represented.

I am not sure what you mean by casting white males as essential buffoons so I can't speak to that part of your post.

It's not that white males aren't cast ... they are. It's that their roles are almost always that of the ineffectual dope. The fall guy. The figure of fun. The exception appears to be obese white men. They have almost the same credibility as men of colour and/or women. Almost, but not quite.

Are these threads race baiting or just pointing out the left's race baiting? Hmmm....

Would you mind sharing some examples if you can find some online? I honestly cannot recall ANY commercial showing any demographic as buffoons (or maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention).

Turn on a tv and watch for an hour or so during peak times - you'll see it's true.

I'm tired at the moment but will look into that tomorrow. I'm assuming you are referring to the major networks, right? Or, is this a problem on most tv stations?

    Big budget advertising. It's everywhere.

The small budget stuff (your local roughneck used car yard, etc) don't do political correctness. That's a luxury their budget doesn't allow for.

Some featured. None playing part of idiot. But whether or not they were featured isn’t the point. According to the OP, and many agreed, was that white men have virtually disappeared from commercials. They just isn’t the case. In fact, I watched an additional hour and a half of tv after Jeopardy and counted 21 commercials that had white men in them.
So, in one night in a two hour span there were a total of 30 commercials that had white men in them. “Virtually disappeared”? I don’t think so.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I don't know where you'd find commercials on line. But for years and years everything bad that happens in a commercial happens to a white man. There's a Geico commercial that's been running for the past few months where there's a fake movie set on a highway and they're doing a cop scene where one of the cops instead of saying his line says the Geico 'save money on insurance' line. Everyone looks at him as he's a blithering idiot. That actor is the only white male in the commercial. That's very typical of the 'someone's a moron and it's always a white male' genre. There's another where another white male is barbecuing and says something to a woman. She smirks because she knows he's a moron and 5 seconds later the barbecue blows up in his face. These are so numerous they're really unmissable. Every so called 'funny' commercial is making a fool of a white man. The only benefit of so few white men in commercials is that these are disappearing.
