Why do so many minorities work at McDonald's and Burger King?

I do not mean to offend or upset you, but in all seriousness, why would you make such a comment when it's clear you don't know much at all about the topic you're commenting on?

Probably more like the prevailing, anti-education culture needs to change, or high-skill high-education jobs are permanently out of the reach of the victims of that anti-education culture.

25 years ago, when I was working those jobs, the employee demographic was pretty much what you'd expect from the neighborhood. Now it seems they're mostly Hispanic. I don't think you could work as a fast food manager in any U.S. city without speaking Spanish.

A HS diploma is all that is required to get many jobs which pay $30,000-50,000 a year, maybe more.

Being a fireman or police officer for example doesn't require college education, and pays quite well with good benefits for a job which requires no higher degree past HS - my uncle's a fireman and he was eligible for retirement in his mid 50s

For that matter, even Walmart is better than 'fast food', not that it's a great job, just just sayin'

The only reason a person would be unable to ever get a better job than fast food for your whole life is if they have no HS diploma or GED, or are a convicted felon

Not to mention, many jobs which require 'higher education' aren't always the most lucrative - for example some "social services" positions require a Master's degree, but don't pay very well for the education required. Many degrees, such as 'philosophy' or 'social sciences' are also nearly useless when it comes to actually finding a job

Ask a Brit how good their socialist healthcare model works, then get back to me.

The Brit's laugh at our healthcare system. So do Canadians.

If the American healthcare system is so good, then why was ObamaCare introduced? And why are so many people complaining about it?

Perhaps many of them are too unmotivated to better themselves? Why do so many caucasions work at fast food restaurants? This is the most ignorant thread I have read on this forum.

To add some actual intelligent material to this thread, the demographics of Mcdonalds depend on where the store is located. Here in Northern Arizona most of the employees are white or Native American. In Atlanta the employees will be black and white. I think that would be common sense, but..yeah..

That being said, what you should be noticing is that there are a lot of old(er) people working at Mcdonalds now. Some may have college educations but they have been thrown off this cliff of an economy. I knew a guy that had a BA in Education, and a Masters in something else and we was flipping burgers.

I've been wondering if the marketing has anything to do with it - I've noticed a lot of McDonald's commercials in specific featuring primarily black or minority actors - seems like they're trying to cater to these demographics in specific

Why do you assume they get the same level of education? I grew up in a wealthy, mostly white area of my state, about 80% of my graduating class went to and graduated from 4 year colleges (Technical and Community Colleges were just getting started in the late 60's). The schools I attended were well funded and offered a very wide variety of courses. You could take Spanish, French, Latin, Russian, or German for your language requirement. You could take Business math, or courses leading to advanced Calculus, you could take a number of advanced placement courses (leading to college credit if you passed the test) in History, Math, Biology, English, and most of the Foreign languages. Yet, if you went to a City school, or to a school in our rural southern part of the state, none of these programs were available to students. To claim that the quality of education is equal for all students is just a lie. Money talks.

And what does 'race' have to do with it?

Not to mention, we're talking about "getting a HS diploma" - if you're saying that in 'poorer' schools the level of education required to get said diploma is of a lower standard - then there should be even less excuse not to get one - we're talking about people who can't even be bothered to get a HS diploma or GED

Really?? I didn't know that. It kinda makes sense then. I know some people...perhaps those who think themselves too good to do certain things---view fastfood as "bad deadend work". But really its that perfect stepping stone for the high school or college student or that individual who might have to work somewhere to build a work ethic. Pretty crucial stepping stone to advance. I bet the CEO knows that and is targeting minorities.

Possibly. Nobody has the aspiration if at working at Micky D's forever, but of course, if there are too many black people doing something, is "bad", hence this thread.

I"m with you....I see it as location. I go to Mick D alot......and there are the ones that are majority white employees, one majority spanish don't speak english employees and one evenly black and white employees and one I go to is all black employees. Kids at my church work in fast food. Black, white and Indian kids.

To me...its not a racial thing.

I do see it as location a lot of times. but at the beach area by my house, it has every fastfood joint known to man. We have a dairy queen and a chick-fil-a side by side in one spot. The DQ, majority black, the CFA, majority white. (both have exceptions of course)

Do blacks just like DQ better? Does CFA only try to hire whites?

I will say, out of the two locations... CFA is better service.

I also went to a McD's in a black section of town one time coming home from a ref match. It was around 11pm and I went to the drivethrough. While sitting there, at the window waiting on my food, a black girl (non-employee) walked from around the front of the building and was going to walk by my truck. At this point in time, I realized, I'm not in the best of neighborhoods and people walking around at 11pm never strikes me as the most trustworthy of people.... but I also realize, I didn't have my doors locked. So I fumble around looking for my auto-door locks, and by the time I find it and lock it, the girl is within earshot of the doors locking sound. I saw it pissed her off and she mouthed "f-you racist" to me as she walked by.

FWIW - I would have locked my door had it been a white girl dressed like this black girl, but that is never a good answer for someone wanting to be offended.

McDonald's also pays "under the table" money. One place tried to get my daughter (whtie), 17, to work for "try out money?" She worked for 2 hours and they never called her back. We went back a few days later and got her $14.50 for the 2 hours she worked. They gave it cash! Mexicans do "under the table."

Your local demographics are part of it as are the number of illegal aliens in your area. Also, whites have higher average rates of education so they aren't as likely to need such jobs for income. I know for a fact there are a certain number of businesses that discriminate against hiring Americans in favor of immigrants, be they legal or otherwise. Years ago in my 20s I applied at a couple hotels in downtown Denver seeking a maid job, and I noted that the employee cafeteria in both of them only had Spanish-speaking Latinos dressed in maid uniforms. One of the human resources agents tried to get me to apply for something else, but I couldn't because I lacked the skills at the time, and no I wasn't hired. You can see the demographic differences in businesses like this even but a couple blocks apart. A few lawsuits discriminating against white and black people in these jobs have been successful, but such filings are few and far between.

Several years ago I went into a Taco Bell in Dunedin, FL and the staff were mostly white, as the town is mostly white.
