The title of the thread is self explanatory. Why is life regarded as being something that is precious? Often the saying presented is that all life is precious, but ultimately what makes it so? Why is life, either in general terms for a great many individuals, or with regard to any specific individual, regarded as being precious?

All life are not considered equally precious
There are cultural differences in how we measure the "preciousness of life" for example in highly religious countries religious heads of churches/mosques/ etc lives are considered more precious along with heads of state but generally the hierarchy runs as follows (just off the top of my head)

    Heads of state/religious leaders
    Extremely wealthy business people
    politicians, military, police
    wealthy business people
    unmarried men
    bureaucracy
    average income workers
    married unemployed women
    children
    unmarried single mothers
    criminals
    animals
    plantlife

You are assuming that it is precious. It's pretty evident from looking at newspapers, listening to the radio and watching tv that life is not valued equally (also see above).

Perhaps because the very concept, "precious", as well as every other concept, reasoning, emotion, feeling, word is based upon and comes from our life.

In general (except for the mentally ill), most of us think of our own life as more precious than most others (exceptions being families).
