I know that the suburbs are full of supermarkets with fresh vegetables, produce, poultry and meat.

there are also microwave meals that are reletively healthy.

unless you live in the middle of absolute nowhere, you have healthy eating options.

Freshest food comes from the rural areas though. Here in the DC area, the markets I go to get their goods from Haymarket, Warrenton, and other rural communities.

I'm not saying there aren't options, it's just that unhealthy fast food is a more convenient option. Fresh produce and meats have to be prepped and cooked, that takes time and effort that a lot of folks don't want to do. I have some chicken thawing in my fridge right now that I can prep and cook for dinner. But that would require me to go downstairs and prep it and cook it for dinner. Or I could order Domino's and have a pizza and a side of wings delivered to my doorstep in about 20 mins without ever having to even get off of the computer.

That's the issue. People are basically lazy, I'm no hypocrite I'm lazy a lot of the time too. There's been plenty of times when I have had meat thawing to cook for dinner then got lazy (or drunk, usually drunk) and just said screw it I don't feel like cooking Ill just order pizza.

Most of the stuff you can have delivered to your door isn't healthy for you. Pizza, Chinese food, etc. Most of the stuff you can conveniently get at a drive thru isn't healthy for you. Even healthy(ish) fast food like Subway requires you to get out of your car and walk in there. Some have drive thru's, either way.

Eating healthy for the most part requires you to put in the effort of cooking your own meals. Eating unhealthy requires a whole lot less work which is why so many folks choose that route. Plus like I said unhealthy fatty foods just flat out taste better. The baked chicken and veggies I'm making for dinner tonight tastes pretty good, but a supreme pizza with ranch and buffalo wings tastes a whole lot better.

You can get whole roasted chickens at most grocery stores. You can buy sliced, cooked meat, at the butcher counter. Nuts don't need cooking and eat the vegetables raw. What more could a person need? :D

I got to the point that I wouldn't even sit down to eat lunch. Just grab a piece of cheese and eat vegies out of the vegie tray. Lunch took about ten minutes and no preparation was needed.

Eating well can be labor intensive but it doesn't have to be. You just have to be willing to adjust to easy, healthy foods.

Part of the problem from my pov is that we have ritualized food. We go to great lengths to prepare it and made the family meal an icon of American culture. When I made my lifestyle change, I had to abandon the concept of "meals" and eat far less food that was very plain, more often. But with time it started to seem normal. Now, you couldn't force me to eat something like a Thanksgiving dinner! I can't even imagine eating that much anymore. Thanksgiving dinners should be illegal! :D That is horrible.

After living this way, I ran across the cauliflower pizza crust recipe. I could have one of my favorite foods again - PIZZA!!!! YAY!!! So I made my first pizza in over two years. I could hardly wait.

I took one bite and it was like eating a salt lick. I couldn't eat it. All of the salt in the cheese and sausage and pepperoni was way too much.

Spinach salads are another great and easy meal. I don't know why anyone eats lettuce when they could be eating raw spinach! Throw in some carrots and broccoli and cheese, with vinegar and oil, and you have a fantastically healthy meal in ten minutes.

PS. A lot of people eat raw kale but I have read you shouldn't do that. It should be lightly cooked or run through a food processor. So spinach and kale omelettes are another favorite of mine. It is fast and easy to make.

I forgot to mention eggs. Eggs are a super food.

I know what you mean about a lifestyle change. I used to be a power lifter many years ago, I still lift weights now but not competitively any more. Back then the diet was the biggest pain in the ass. Squatting over double my body weight was the easy part it was the damn dieting that was hard. Counting calories, micro's and macro's, spending every Sunday cooking up loads of healthy meals for the week, portioning out everything etc. That was what was annoying. I hated eating like that, for one vegetables are just gross period lol. And two "healthy" meats are gross also lol. Chicken breasts aren't very good unless you do something to them to make them taste better, which is usually something fatty or unhealthy which negates the point. So basically I just held my nose and ate food as part of my routine.

I still power lift now but I've long stopped eating like that anymore because I don't really have to since I'm not forced to watch my weight and compete or anything. The physique I had back then was pretty damn good I will admit, mostly attributed to the diet. Now the physique isn't as great but that's a trade off I've long since been willing to accept for being able to eat a pizza instead of chicken breasts and broccoli lol

I used to always remember my parents telling me that as you get older your taste buds change and you will like vegetables and stuff. Nope. Fast forward decades later and broccoli is still just as nasty as it was when I was 5 lol. Thats what it boils down to for a lot of folks. Healthy food just flat out doesn't taste very good so they'd rather just eat a cheeseburger from Wendy's.

Some folks could probably condition themselves to acquiring a taste for more healthy foods as you have and after a while would find the fatty greasy stuff gross. I however am not one of those people. I spent many years eating extremely healthy and a slice of pizza tasted just as good to me years later as it did when I was first forced to give up pizza lol

I'd rather eat burgers and drink beer and die at 70 than eat yogurt and apples for breakfast and live to be 100 lol

There is something to be said for the quality of life. But trust me, when you lose your health and you are staring at the graveyard, broccoli is nothing. And beyond that, I wanted to have lots of sex with hot young women so I had to get in shape!!! Again, eating broccoli is NOTHING! :D

For over 30% of the population, being fantastically fit isn't the issue. Obesity or extreme obesity is the issue. And you can't lose the weight without making the changes a lifestyle. Diets don't work. Lifestyle changes do.

PS, you don't have to be old to lose your health. At 40 I thought my life was over.

Optical illusion. The ones in progressive urbania
I havnt noticed a substantial difference in obesity b/n rural and urban.

I DO notice far more folks yelling at nothing, to no one in urbania. Does mental illness flock to the cities or does it generate there?

Walk around NYC, LA, SF, Chicago, Boston, you see people mostly in shape.

Go out to the suburbs and rural area, everyone is fat. Really really fat.

    Why is this?

Do they refuse to excercise? Refuse to walk?

    Obsessive eating disorders?

I already posted a link to a paper validating his claim. It is stated to be a well-known fact that people in rural areas have greater rates of obesity.

It was blown off with some comment about something completely unrelated.

I agree with your grandmother. We are all going to die eventually and enjoying life is what it is all about. Those protein shakes might make her live a little longer but those breakfasts mean that she is happier by enjoying the food she is eating.

That is what you do when you have given up. And at some point that is fine. But know it's all downhill from there.

It isn't just about dying. It is about quality of life. Everyone is acting like you're healthy and then you drop. But no! You could end up spending years in agony, or trapped in a dead body. Imagine lying lifeless in a bed for 5 or 10 years because of a preventable stroke. You would have a lot of time to consider the choices that landed you there.

It isn't just about being dead or alive.

There is a highly respected doctor who has developed an extreme diet for heart patients. Bill Clinton is on that diet. The doctor claims that heart disease is 100% preventable. The last I saw, not one of his heart patients has had a heart attack since starting his diet. He has had a 100% success rate.

It has been established that some vegetables will taste bitter to people with specific DNA. Brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage are all bitter tasting to me but not to other people.

    https://io9.gizmodo.com/are-there-some-vegetables-you-cant-stand-it-may-be-gen-1532668567

FTR I substitute fruit instead of those vegetables and that seems to work for me.

I had sausages, eggs and hash browns for breakfast with fruit juice followed by dried figs and apricots. I worked out in the pool yesterday and I will be installing a door today and checking on the plumping work that I did yesterday for any leaks, That and walking the dogs means that the food I am eating is being burned as calories instead of clogging my arteries,

Yes, if I had that same breakfast and just sat around doing nothing all day I would be a candidate for a heart attack but my resting heart rate is 60 bpm. Yes, I just checked to be sure. For someone who is 65 and who intends to remain active and healthy I have a good quality of life and I will maintain it as long as I keep moving.

Good weather is conducive to that. I grew up there and walked a mile to the beach every morning with a surf board on my head and surfed a couple of hours before walking home and then walking another mile to school. Only thing I miss about so cal is the weather.

I'm inclined to agree with the doctor, heart disease probably is nearly preventable. I get the quality of life thing but I also enjoy living my life and I am fully aware that a lot of the things I do are not very good for me. But I enjoy them so I do it. Drinking excess amounts of whiskey and passing out on the couch isn't healthy. But it's what I did last night. Liver is quite upset right now I'm sure...

I'm not going to give up the things I enjoy just so I can live longer. I'll take the risk of getting some sort of ailment later on down the road if it means I can enjoy my life for the time being. I do exercise and I do eat relatively healthy for the most part but never do I stop and not get a burger because "it's bad for you". Most days I'll cook my own dinner which is usually chicken and vegetables. Other days I'll order pizza and drink one too many glasses of whiskey and fall on my face.

I know people who eat extremely healthy diets, when we go out to dinner they sit there and order a salad with light dressing or something. While I'm sitting across from them eating a 20oz ribeye and mac and cheese because both of those things are delicious. Point is I'm going to be happy, I'll exercise to keep myself in relatively decent shape and health but I'm not going to give up the things I enjoy in life for the sake of living a longer life. If I had a crystal ball and could see the future and saw myself laying in the hospital bed dying of heart disease in 30 years then I'd still be grilling bratwurst and drinking beer this weekend with my friends watching football.

I have no qualms with anybody who lives the super healthy lifestyle, I'm just not one of those people whose going to live like that.

Why are right wingers able to call all city folk thus and so, but calling small town America thus and so, is crass and vulgar? I am sick and tired of the Calif bashing, and the bashing in general of savvy city folk, cuz the rural folk feel intimidated.

How did you determine the skinny people walking around the city actually lived there? And how did you determine the fat people walking aroun.....eh actually this thread is too dumb for me. Carry on.

    Really?

    You really don't know?

Let me put it like this....

The subdivision is too far spread out apart and you have your car/your ride to take you everywhere.
Across the parking lot from one store to another.
Coupled with all that sugar eaten - is there any wonder why stairs make you lose your breath?
    Think about it.
You're a human, and was built to hunt, so run more often, be more active in today's world.
Wherever you live unless it's somewhere in the artic or blazing sun, then just keep hydrated with clean water, not no Coca-Cola or cola or nothing like that, you hear?
