    Does cannabis kill cancer?

Is this information being suppressed by influential people who should know better?

Just... No. Read the scientific papers, check what the actual evidence says, and for the love of god stop listening to bull(*)(*)(*)(*) conspiracy sites. Look, keep your eye open for this claim:

Any website that makes this claim is utterly untrustworthy when it comes to cancer, because this claim is not only false, but really really really false. Anyone peddling it either has no idea what they're talking about, or is lying to you - one or the other. It's like if a site about AIDS claimed that AIDS was caused by something other than the HIV virus - you can stop reading; the site either is lying to you or the people running it are patently clueless.

Meanwhile, the site fails to differentiate between the upwards of 200 different diseases known as cancer, and points to tentative studies in rodents with little to no actual scientific significance as evidence of a grand conspiracy to keep cannabis down. Um, no. That's a gross oversimplification of the results presented. What we have are a handful of small-scale studies that various organizations acknowledge that show potential. And the current studies to see if that potential unfolds are still ongoing. There are no phase 2 clinical trials with CBD. The evidence is there, but it's still weak. This is not the point to jump up and scream "OH MY GOD WEED CURES ALL CANCERS THE GOVERNMENT IS SUPPRESSING IT". Especially when what these studies are advocating isn't actually cannabis, but a synthetic derivative which is not illegal.

Seriously dude, you are way to credulous. It seems to me you'll buy into any crap on the web as long as it sounds like it will cure cancer. I can't wrap my head around it; you'd think after hundreds of posts, you'd at least start looking skeptically at sites that make ridiculous claims like that.

But......Stagnant....considering the calibre of the benefits of cannabis on the number of ailments that it has been studied on so far.......it does seem obvious that what could be termed Big Pharma could well be lobbying to see that Stage 3 tests are delayed and delayed and delayed!

Well, once you have evidence of that, I welcome you to present it. I don't assume massive conspiracy theories, and I also don't assume that the science will move quite that fast on its own. In reality, the compound being tested is not cannabis; rather, as previously stated, it's a related synthetic compound called CBD, and to my knowledge there is in fact a ton of money in in it should it turn out to be as good as is claimed. There is no reason to delay large-scale testing, and no feasible mechanism to do so.

Smoking pot gives you lung cancer just like smoking cigarettes does. The lie stated in this thread apparently come from someone brain damaged by pot.

There are many psychoactive agents in mj (see cannabinoids). CBD stands for Cannabidiol (not to be confused with "cannabinol"). It is the second most abundant psychoactive agent (next to THC) in cannabis. Research is revealing that CBD may have many potentially useful medicinal applications - much more than THC and without its many negatives (see below).

Also, there are different kinds of cannabis. One form, Indica, has 3 - 5 times the CBD as another type, Sativa. And,

For an example of just one (of many) of the negatives associated with cannabis, see the following paper on the effects of cannabis and the onset of schizophrenia and other forms of psychosis:

Foti, D.J.; Kotov, R.; Guey, L.T.; Bromet, E.J.; (2010). "Cannabis Use and the Course of Schizophrenia".
The American Journal of Psychiatry, VOL. 167, No. 8

[btw - I use mj regularly and have so for years but I'm also not a complete idiot. I know a bit about how THC works at the molecular level to produce the high and I'm not ignorant of its potential pharmacological dangers to the brain/mind. Call me a fool and you wouldn't be far from the truth.]

Smoking weed is not the only way to use it and most studies showing the positive effects of cannibis are by and large using weed extracts in a different form. Eating tobacco doesn't give you lung cancer and neither does eating weed. It just puts really bad taste in your mouth and puts nicotine/THC in your system, depending on what was eaten.

Howdy friend! Thanks for saying that!

I'm a neuroscience junky and it's amazing how just a simple positive, friendly statement (like yours) can determine another person's mental outlook - for a little while, anyway. It's dopamine that does it. When someone gets a reward or any positive input from their environment, a rise in the neurotransmitter dopamine's duration of existence in certain sets of neural synapses is what gives one that boost that we all love so much. In fact, it also underlies the high as well as the addictive qualities of opiates and amphetamines. In the case of these powerful drugs, the feeling of "reward" is taken to outrageous extremes - even to the point where rats (and many people) prefer it to even food and will starve to death in preference to its neural effects.

People don't realize the power they have at their constant disposal to make others happy and affect their outlook through just very small, positive gestures. If they could even get a glimpse of that it would transform the way people interact.

Instead, we belittle, gripe, blame, hate, resent, and ten thousand other harmful habits of interaction. In 50 - 100 years, even the general public will have been taught from the results of the explosion in brain research that's now still in its infancy - just as most people now know much more about the universe in which the inhabit, their workings of their own bodies, nutritional facts, and a host of other fruits of scientific research, than was the case in say, the middle ages. Hopefully, in a few more generations, people will treat each other a little better - out of knowledge of their own minds workings, rather than out of ignorance and their animal nature.

Really? News to me. Here's what you need to impress me:
    - A little bit of skepticism when analyzing your sources

...No really, that's it. Darckriver's post was good because he made well-grounded claims and backed it up with sources which were generally quite well-established as valid - peer-reviewed scientific journals. You cited a website that brought up long-since-proven-wrong cancer claims with no evidence, then proceeded to assert a massive conspiracy (again, with no evidence), and finally make wild, pie-in-the-sky claims (with weak evidence, but not understanding what the evidence actually means). Whenever you feel like trusting a source, ask yourself - "Would Stagnant pull a Yahtzee Crowshaw on me for posting this?", judged largely on what you already know. Unfortunately, you don't seem to have figured this out over the last month we've been talking, so I guess I won't hold my breath. :(

Not entirely sure how this ties in with my post; I absolutely support the regulated legalization of marijuana and placing it in the same category as tobacco or alcohol.

pot doesn't kill cancer. It treats pain, nausea, loss of appetite, and other things that are side effects of chemo-therapy, and other cancer treatments.

"pot doesn't kill cancer. It treats pain, nausea, loss of appetite, and other things that are side effects of chemo-therapy, and other cancer treatments."

I have yet to understand why it is legal to PRESCRIBE opiates, under controlled conditions, but not legal to PRESCRIBE marijuana, under controlled conditions. Note the word prescribe.

Proscribe. It has to do with legal classifications and the fact that Marijuana is treated far worse than it ought to be. It's really a load of utter bull(*)(*)(*)(*) for no adequate reason beyond "reefer madness".

Getting off topic here but whatever. I really agree with you about this stuff but as I was saying to a friend who has horrible health problems, (which I ignorantly think may be due to stress), the traditional way to cope with stress is to unload on others. Its the only accounting I can find for the fact that really angry and disagreeable people live so long. The other side of this, and a way to live possibly even longer, may simply be the ability to refuse unnecessary responsibility and the ability to create and express joy.

The wrong side of this is the fake it until you make it idea where people think they have to plaster a fake smile on their faces and spout positive drivel.

(Personally I am OK with those guys dying young.)

Unfortunately way too many people are completely neurotic about this stuff. They take on all responsibility as if it were their personal cross. They never learn to say no to an unfair request, and live in a kind of solitary misery waiting for someone to really appreciate all of their sacrifices.

(Personally I think smoking out once and awhile could help those people a lot.)

To address the thread----- Unfortunately the big Ph companies are always going to pursue the most profitable cures, often at the expense of the best ones.

Quite a list of plausible deniability.

It must have taken several minutes to come up with that.
