Farouk Kaddoumi was born in the town of Jinsafut near Nablus and later his family moved to Jaffa in present-day Israel. During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War they fled to Nablus in the West Bank. For three years in the early 1950s he worked in Saudi Arabia for the Arab-American Petroleum Company (ARAMCO). In 1954 he moved to Egypt and while studying economy and political science at the Cairo University, he joined the Baath party. In 1960 he joined Fatah in the United Arab Emirates. In 1965 and 1966 he worked for the ministry of health of Kuwait but in 1966 was expelled from the country for anti-governmental activities connected with the PLO. By 1969 he became one of key figures in the PLO and after 1973 he headed its political department in Damascus, Syria. In 1976, Arafat and Kaddoumi met with Meir Vilner and Tawfik Toubi, heads of Rakah (New Communist List), which had developed after the 1965 split in the Israeli Communist Party, and from which Hadash eventually developed. This meeting led to a close cooperation. Kaddoumi participated in the activities of Said al-Muragha (Abu Musa) group, including the 1983 mutiny attempt against Yassir Arafat (see Fatah Uprising), but switched sides and was assigned to the Central Committee of Fatah. He has been living in Tunis since the early 1980s, where the PLO was based after it evacuated Lebanon. In 1985, he claimed that Leon Klinghoffer was pushed over the side of the Achille Lauro by his wife for the insurance money.[1] At the beginning of the 1990s, he served as the head of the PLO's political department.[2] After the Oslo accords in 1993, which he opposed as a betrayal of the PLO's principles, he refused to move to the Palestinian territories with the rest of the leadership to set up the Palestinian National Authority (PNA). You posted an accurate part of American history. I appreciate that. I wan't to ask you one question. Before Pearl Harbor, who or what was keeping us from going to war with Germany to protect our allies? It is like now, we are fighting for compromise. Our people must compromise. Slipping into fascism is a very real possibility based on our history. We came very close then and we are very close now. We have different value systems. We have an authoritarian sect which is extremely conservative and an extremely liberal sect. All the rest of us won't to work it out but we both have to give up something in the mix that is not too over the top for the other. Liberals like to share, authoritarians like to control. There has to be a balance of values to live in a civilized society (not necessarily a happy one).

In a whisper I called to the warder who was standing guard alongside the cell door and I passed the tube to him through the hole of the lock. I whispered: "Water, water!" At first the man appeared to be at a loss and was perplexed; then he disappeared for a minute and returned with his mouth full of water; he placed the pen tube in his mouth and again, through the hole of the lock, spurted the water inside. Only early on the third day of detention, after we had sent off a letter to the Police Commander in the Rabbi's name, in which he adjured him by Allah, did one of the warders appear and place a bucket of water in the middle of the cell. They forced Rabbi Nafusi to climb up to the iron bars, to hang there and declare with the rest, "Long live Abdul Nasser!" If he did not shout with all his might, he was struck. After two days, he was released from the prison and returned to Alexandria. For 25 days I stayed in the prison until, as a national of a foreign State, I was given attention; I was then transferred from the prison, with 11 Jews of Greek and Spanish nationality, to a Russian ship anchored in Alexandria port. The ship brought us to Cyprus. From Nicosia I succeeded in contacting my wife and three children in Alexandria. I instructed them to apply to the Consulate of the State of which I am a citizen to handle their departure from Alexandria. After a fortnight, my wife and children left Egypt and came to me. Broken in Body and Spirit Afterwards I went with my family to Naples. While I was in Naples I used to visit the port from time to time to see whether, among those arriving from Egypt, there were relatives and friends of mine. The scenes that I witnessed in Naples were terrible. Each day Jewish refugees from Egypt arrived at the port and the same suffering and torture could be seen in their faces and on their bodies. Most of them had been imprisoned in the "Ezbekia" Police Station in Cairo. They arrived with shaven heads and broken limbs.
