Kremlin E-trolling: Guardian moderators, deal with 40,000 comments a day, "clear pro-Kremlin orchestrated attack"

Should PF follow Guardian´s example and remove Kremlin troll posts (fascists, junta, etc.) as well?

Trolling covers a multitude of sins but a particularly nasty strain has emerged in the midst of the armed conflict in Ukraine, which infests comment threads on the Guardian and elsewhere, despite the best efforts of moderators. Readers and reporters alike are concerned that these are from those paid to troll, and to denigrate in abusive terms anyone criticising Russia or President Vladimir Putin.

One complaint came to the readers' editor's office on 6 March. "In the past weeks have become incredibly frustrated and disillusioned by your inability to effectively police the waves of Nashibot trolls who've been relentlessly posting pro-Putin propaganda in the comments on Ukraine v Russia coverage.

"... the quantity of pro-Kremlin trolling on this topic which has been documented extensively since 2012 as a real and insidious threat to online communities of idea and debate, has rendered commenting on these articles all but meaningless, and a worthless exercise in futility and frustration for anyone not already being mind-controlled by the Kremlin."

On 23 April the writer complained again: "One need only pick a Ukraine article at random, pick any point in the comments at random, and they will find themselves in a sea of incredibly aggressive and hostile users (the most obvious have accounts created since February 2014 but there also exist those who registered with the Guardian before the high point of the crisis) who post the most biased, inciteful [sic] pro-Kremlin, anti-western propaganda that seems as if it's taken from a template, so repetitive are the statements. Furthermore, these comments are consistently capturing inordinate numbers of 'recommends', sometimes on the order of 10 to 12 times what pro-Ukrainian comments receive."

Luke Harding, the Guardian's highly experienced former Moscow correspondent, who was expelled in 2011, is in no doubt about the nature of the campaign and how damaging it is to debate in the threads. From Ukraine, he said: "It's a well-attested phenomenon in Russia."

On 7 February 2012 the Guardian reported: "A pro-Kremlin group runs a network of internet trolls, seeks to buy flattering coverage of Vladimir Putin and hatches plans to discredit opposition activists and media, according to private emails allegedly hacked by a group calling itself the Russian arm of Anonymous.

"The group has uploaded hundreds of emails it says are to, from and between Vasily Yakemenko, the first leader of the youth group Nashi [and] now head of the Kremlin's Federal Youth Agency, its spokeswoman, Kristina Potupchik, and other activists. The emails detail payments to journalists and bloggers, the group alleges."

At the time no one from the group was prepared to confirm or deny the veracity of the emails, which were sent between November 2010 and December 2011. Harding said that it was obvious the trolling on Ukraine-related issues was organised, as the trolls "are given talking points" and certain phrases were used again and again. The complainant to the Guardian said: "They still post only extremely biased, offensive, trolling commentary including insulting your correspondent, Luke Harding, whom they libel as a 'Russian hater' and mock as 'Luke Happyman'."

One comment read: "Yes, sir. You are certainly correct. Sometimes I wonder how many of the top people in the new rightwing pro-Nato Guardian are privately educated. I imagine that Russian-hater Luke Happyman was but do get some state-educated sxcum [sic] as well. Still, if anyone knows, please inform us before the censorious moderators get to work again (again)."

In fairness there is no conclusive evidence about who is behind the trolling, although Guardian moderators, who deal with 40,000 comments a day, believe there is an orchestrated campaign. Harding, who is inured to the abuse, would simply like better systems to deal with it, as would the moderation and community teams.

A senior moderator said: "We can look at the suspicious tone of certain users, combined with the date they signed up, the time they post and the subjects they post on. Zealous pro-separatist comments in broken English claiming to be from western counties are very common, and there's a list of tropes we've learnt to look out for. These posts may be suspicious but it's when the content of them breaks our community standards that we will step in.

How is it different than the DNC paying people to work the forums for them?

How is this different than gold pimps on every website ever?

Our local paper made it quite easy to end trolling--you have to use your FB account to post a comment. Now very few articles get comment compared to when one could post anonymously. On balance, I prefer we have free discussion, even abusive posting, than highly controlled content.

Mmhh, I think they will find it well difficult [sure boring, I remember when as moderator I had occasion to deal with a group of trolls]. Anyway it depends on the tools they can use.

Just an idea.
A thing they could do is to record and check the IPs of the trolls. May be they can find a net matrix, this could [could] allow them to filter the connections of the trolls. But it's not easy [IPs can be cloned like phone numbers ...].

Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service has closed a tender for three research projects that aim to monitor blogs and social media and distribute a large amount of messages to shape public opinion, the daily publication Kommersant writes. [Russian]

Sluzhba Vneshney Razvedki, or Foreign Intelligence Service, is part of the Russian General Staff of the Armed Forces.

According to the report, the intelligence agency is funding the three projects to the tune of 30 million rubles ($900,000).

To be completed by the end of this year and 2013, the purpose of the three systems is to automatically disseminate information on the Internet.

Of the three, the "Dispute" system will be designed to monitor blogs and social media, to understand how online communites that spread information are created and how they do it online, and also to measure how popular the information eventually becomes.

A second system called "Monitor-3" sets up "methods of organising and managing virtual Internet communities of experts" and creates tasks with workflow and reporting.

Based on the outcomes from the above two, the "Storm-12" software will automatically disseminate information in large social networks, being a "virtual army" that influences public opinion. Storm-12 will also collect statistics and analyse the efficiency of information sharing.

The systems will target social networks in Russia and overseas, and a source Kommersant spoke to said the first countries where they will be tested could be the Eastern European ones, which were part of the Soviet Union.

However, News agency RIA Novosti reported that a company claimed to have won the tenders for the project, Iteranet, denies taking part in it.

“We are not in the business of developing systems to monitor blogs and plant information in the blogosphere,” Iteranet CEO and former head of the Russian Cryptography Instititute Igor Matskevich told RIA Novosti.

Russian Internet pundit and popular blogger Anton Nosik said the main impediment for Storm-12 will be anti-spam measures built into popular social networks, and that part of the money will be spent on developing measures to neutralise these.

The coordinator for Russia's Safer Internet Centre, Urban Parfentiev, said the systems are replacements for old fashioned radio and TV propaganda machinery, to be used to debunk images spread by Western media.

In this case, my friend, they need help. They need professional aid from organizations able to make something more, up to ghost counterattacks on the net. In a few words, if this goes on, it's near to a real usage of "networking warfare". If I was at the Guardian I will make a phone call to the other side of the Ocean, you know that odd US Agency with that enormous parking. But this would mean something more than "trolling".

Britain on Wednesday accused Russia of fomenting unrest in eastern Ukraine with "a torrent of disinformation" and called on Moscow to lean on pro-Russian separatists to end their conflict with government forces.

In some of its strongest comments on the subject yet, the British Foreign Office said it was not credible for Russia to deny responsibility for events in eastern Ukraine.

"We call upon Russia to use its influence to put an end to the instability. Russia has refused to condemn the illegal actions of armed groups that look to it for direction," the British Foreign Office said in a statement.

"We have heard a torrent of disinformation and inflammatory statements [from Russia] that fuel unrest and create unfounded fears. We have seen a military build-up and maneuvers on Ukraine's borders designed to intimidate."

Britain said Russia's annexation of Crimea had left Moscow isolated on the world stage. London had no wish to isolate Russia, the Foreign Office said, but it and others could not ignore attacks upon Ukraine's sovereignty.

Britain's intervention coincided with Ukrainian government forces pressing ahead with an offensive against pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.

British Prime Minister David Cameron will hold rare face-to-face talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday in France at which he will urge Putin to help de-escalate the situation in Ukraine.

The meeting, which Cameron requested, was originally scheduled for Friday but was brought forward by a day for technical reasons. Both men will be in France for the 70th anniversary of the World War II D-Day landings in Normandy.

It will be the first time the two have met since Prince Charles sparked a diplomatic spat by likening Putin to Adolf Hitler.

British officials have said Cameron wants to use the meeting to encourage Putin to begin to build a working relationship with Ukraine's President-elect Petro Poroshenko.

The funny thing is, you guys have the fascist arument all wrong also. Russia originally accused the separatists of being fascists. Really, but now the governments fascists. Liar? That man is the leader of Donetsk in the photo. This was old news. Russian media was the first to call him a fascist, before Donetsk was a state. They wanted people to believe that the government couldn't control the ultra right like him.
