UN's Navi Pillay warns of Israel Gaza 'war crimes'

The UN's top human rights official has condemned Israel's military actions in the Gaza Strip, saying that war crimes may have been committed.

Navi Pillay told an emergency debate at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva that Israel's military offensive had not done enough to protect civilians.

She also condemned Hamas for "indiscriminate attacks" on Israel.

What war crimes? Did Britain do enough in WWII to protect civilians? If Hamas is willing to sacrifice the Palestinians to achieve its ends to destroy Israel, whose fault is it really?

Hamas is storing rockets in schools and hospitals.

Firing them from densely populated areas, thereby making civilians into targets.

    War is a crime.

    War crime is an oxymoron.

'Ms Livni also described the UN Human Rights Council as an "anti-Israel" body.'

So basically she's saying Israel is against human rights?

And now there's going to be a UN independent inquiry after the UN Human Rights Council was asked by Palestine to have one and the 47 members voted:

29 states voted in favour of the investigation.
17 abstained, including many EU states.
1 voted against - the US

Whattya mean, how? Infiltrate the Paleos to determine where the munitions are being moved, through and to, and destroy them before they're fired.
I suppose this is already being done, to whatever extent, but since Israel already has such tight control over materiel movements, it seems that they could stop a whole lot more from being deployed in the first place.
I guess if they did that though, they wouldn't have an excuse to blow up little kids as much as they do.

Israel did not share its dome with Palestinians. Moreover, they sent ground troops to facilitate the killings.

They could probably blow up munitions through the covert actions, yes, but then how do you give populace a fair warning? At least now, with knock-knock warning explosions, the smart ones run away, the dumb ones stay and die.

It is a prickly situation. I guess that's why they're going after the tunnels now. Of course, the hunt for Hamas leadership is perpetual....

It's pretty clear that israel could inflict far, far, far greater damage on civilians and civilians alone if they so chose than they are doing at the moment. What we have here seems to be collateral casualties from precision strikes. There is always a cost to military action, but that does not mean that said military action is directed entirely upon any given civilian population. In this case Israel has the hardware available to do that sort of thing on a very grand scale, but they aren't, so it would stand to reason that it's not what they are trying to do.

As Hamas is bombing Israel, Israel sends recorded calls to the Palestinians, and drops fliers letting the Palestinians know where they are going to bomb and calls for them to evacuate. How can that be a war crime? Commonsense says no. Hatred says....destroy Israel.

You will find that information buried deep in this story here. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-28320901

Only deluded Zionists and appeasers believe that trash. I suppose the 200 children killed by Israel must also be the fault of Hamas ? Israel targets civilians, UN schools (5), hospitals and then invents pathetic stories like 'Hamas did it' to make us look bad.
Israel is a despicable murderous pariah state which needs dealing with and no doubt will be in time, once we got rid of our corrupt appeasing Western leaders. Mark my words, it will happen.
Thanks to the US, UK and the French backing we have yet another Crusade in the Middle East, with Israel now taking the place of Romans.

The vote by the US didn't surprise me but at least we had the balls to take a stand instead of a cowardly vote of abstention.

Ball's would have been to vote for the investigation rather than to vote to cover up the truth.

But we all know that that will never ever happen.

Fortunately the truth eventually resurrects itself.

I think Israel has over played her hand.
I don't understand a nation that can spend time, years and money and assassinate those responsible for the horrendous attack in Israeli Olympiads. Without collateral damage. There are means and ways to go after aHamas leadership other than this.
Sorry but the Israelis are not stupid and have chosen to conduct the war they have started.
Hamas should be destroyed and missles should not be lobed to,Israel.

I agree that Hamas should be destroyed and missiles should not be lobbed at Israel but these are two separate things.

I also agree that Israel has committed war crimes on numerous occasions in the past and is likely committing more now (investigation needs be done).

The facts are that 3 Israeli kids were killed. Hamas is usually proud can claims responsibility for killing but this time they said they did not do it.

Israel went out and illegally arrested hundreds of people and assassinated 6 Hamas leaders. This was an illegal action and so is arresting hundreds of people and detaining them.

Hamas retaliated with rockets which was no surprise. What else did we expect when target assassinations are carried out on the basis of an unproven accusation ?

I really dislike extremist Islam (and in fact Islam in general) but I also dislike intentional killing of innocent civilians.

"Israel, as an occupying power, is in direct violation of Article III of the Geneva Convention Relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War. This convention lays out the minimum standards for the protection of civilians in a conflict that is not international in scope. Article 3(1) states that those who take no active role in hostilities must be treated humanely, without discrimination, regardless of racial, social, religious or economic distinctions. The article prohibits certain acts commonly carried out against noncombatants in regions of armed conflict, including murder, mutilation, cruel treatment and torture. It prohibits the taking of hostages as well as sentences given without adequate due process of law. Article 3(2) mandates care for the sick and wounded."

And Obama and our spineless congress are war criminals as well for subsidizing a criminal state.
