Myanmar army chief advocates democratization
Mon, Mar 28, 2016 - Myanmars powerful army chief yesterday vowed to keep the nation on the path to democracy, days before Aung San Suu Kyis civilian government takes office after decades of army rule.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing made the remarks at an annual display of military might by Myanmars armed forces, a body that long crushed democratic aspirations with an iron fist but has since stewarded the country through a remarkable transition. I would solemnly impart the fact that the Tatmadaw [army] will cooperate to bring about the prosperity of the union and its citizens, he said during a speech to troops at the annual Armed Forces Day parade in Naypyidaw. The two main obstacles to democratization are a failure to abide by the rule of law and regulations and the presence of armed insurgencies. These could lead to chaotic democracy, he said. Only if these two obstacles are properly tackled and overcome will there be advancement on the path to democracy.

Myanmar has undergone a stunning political transformation since 2011, blossoming from isolation under successive juntas to become an increasingly vibrant nation. Its growing political openness was crowned by November last years election that saw Aung San Suu Kyis National League for Democracy storm to victory. After a lengthy transition her government is to take over from the outgoing army-backed administration on Wednesday, ending more than five decades of direct and indirect military rule. Aung San Suu Kyi, who is banned by a military-era constitution from becoming president, is to serve as minister of foreign affairs but has vowed to rule through Burmese president-elect Htin Kyaw. Her ability to cooperate with and confront the still powerful military will be a crucial test of her government, which faces a range of challenges including poverty, corruption, years of chronic under-investment and insurgencies by ethnic minority rebels.

The military still holds strong political sway under a charter that reserves a quarter of the Burmese parliaments seats for unelected soldiers and grants the army chief direct control over three key ministries: Home affairs, border affairs and defense. It also has significant financial clout, with two sprawling military-owned conglomerates owning vast chunks of the economy and decades of wealth accumulated by the military elite over the years. Yesterdays parade was a vivid reminder of the militarys wealth with polished battle tanks, surface-to-air missiles, armored vehicles and helicopters all on display. During junta rule, spending on education and healthcare was a fraction of the militarys budget, a daunting legacy which now confronts the incoming civilian government.

The military seized power in a 1962 coup and for decades suppressed all opposition. But it stepped back in 2011, paving the way for a semi-civilian government to prepare for November's election. But it retains important powers. More than 10,000 military personnel marched in a parade marking the day in 1945 when a young nationalist leader, General Aung San, and his followers in a fledgling army turned against Japanese forces occupying their country. Hundreds of veterans, foreign defense attaches and politicians gathered before dawn on a big parade field to watch the ceremony.

But conspicuously absent was Aung San's daughter, National League for Democracy (NLD) leader Suu Kyi. She attended the ceremony in 2013 but has not since then. Also absent was president-elect Htin Kyaw, Suu Kyi's hand-picked leader who will take power on Friday. Htin Kyaw, a loyal confidant of the hugely popular Suu Kyi, will take the role only because the Noble laureate is barred from holding the position under a military-drafted constitution, which she has openly criticized.

Min Aung Hlaing defended the charter on Sunday, saying it was drafted by coordinated efforts of intellectuals, experts from various fields and national races representatives and was ratified by a nationwide referendum, and paved the way for the November election. The 2008 constitution enshrines deep political powers for the military. A quarter of the parliament seats are reserved for unelected military officers, giving them an effective veto over constitutional changes, and the commander-in-chief remains in control of three key main ministries.

same feeling here, but waltky should feel shame that US have NOT been doing anything for true democracy in South Korea even though US military has been there for long time.

US have been just supporting dictatorship on South Korea. It still is.

Its actually North Korea who tried to eliminate South Korea dictator president DuHwan who was responsible for GwangJu Uprising in South Korea

DuHwan survived but he was later tried in South Korea, got death sentence,but forgiven (??).

You should also know son of the founder of popular TaeKwonDo organization (ITF)
also tried to carry out plans to assassinate DuHwan. I think it failed because something went wrong in the middle of process.

Even now its North Korea who is trying to eliminate dictator GuenHye who elected herself through flaw.

What did United States do when democracy were all screwd up in South Korea? Some people will laugh if an American praises democracy.

Myanmar soldiers admit to killing villagers: witnesses
Fri, Aug 12, 2016 - Seven army soldiers on trial for murder have admitted their involvement in the killing of five villagers in northern Shan State, witnesses at an unprecedented court martial said.

In a highly unusual move, the army invited 15 residents from the remote village of Mong Yaw, where the killings took place, to witness the court martial at a nearby military base on Tuesday. Four of them have described the proceedings to reporters. “The judge read the murder case reports and asked for confessions from the soldiers, who admitted they were responsible,” said Sai Kaung Kham, a Mong Yaw villager who has been helping the families attending the military trial. Military representatives contacted in the capital, Naypyitaw, and at the Northeast Command in Lashio did not respond to requests for comment about the trial.

Last month, in a rare public admission of wrongdoing by the still-powerful military, intelligence chief Mya Tun Oo told reporters the army was responsible for killing five men from Mong Yaw and said the culprits would be prosecuted. Witnesses had previously said that soldiers rounded up dozens of men from the village, in an area riven by a long-running ethnic insurgency, on June 25 and led five away. Their bodies were found in a shallow grave a few days later. Both the news conference by one of the nation’s most senior generals and the invitation to villagers to attend the military trial were unprecedented. The army has occasionally acknowledged troops have been at fault in previous incidents, but has usually done so in vaguely worded official statements.

Three officers and three lower-ranking soldiers have admitted murdering the villagers, witnesses present at the court martial said. The seventh serviceman, the highest-ranking of those on trial, said he did not order the soldiers to “kill” the villagers, but to “clear them out.” The soldiers said they had arrested and interrogated five men and found two of them were related to a local ethnic armed group. They said they asked their superiors for further instructions, villager Sai Kaung Kham said.

The low-ranking soldiers then proceeded to kill the villagers, acting on orders, the witnesses at the trial said. “They were worried that if they let the three villagers go back, they would tell others they had been tortured,” the soldiers told the court martial, according to Sai Kaung Kham. Before killing them, the soldiers dressed some of the men in camouflage trousers, Sai Kaung Kham and other witnesses said. It was not clear when the court martial would end. Aye Lu, the wife of Aik Sai who was one of the men killed, said that at the court martial one of the soldiers admitted knifing her husband to death. “I want to see those who killed my husband sent to jail,” she said.

Obama formally lifts US’ Myanmar sanctions
Sun, Oct 09, 2016 - US President Barack Obama on Friday formally announced the lifting of US sanctions on Myanmar by terminating an emergency order that deemed the policies of the former military government a threat to US national security.

“I have determined that the situation that gave rise to the national emergency ... has been significantly altered by Burma’s [Myanmar’s] substantial advances to promote democracy, including historic elections in November 2015,” Obama said in a letter to the US House and Senate speakers. A US Department of the Treasury statement said that as a result of the termination of the emergency order the economic and financial sanctions administered by the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control were no longer in effect. The move followed a meeting between Burmese State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and Obama in Washington last month, when she called for the lifting of economic sanctions against her country, and he said he was willing to do this.

Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won a sweeping victory in the November elections last year. Obama’s letter pointed to the formation of a democratically elected, civilian-led government as a result of the election, the release of many political prisoners and improved human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression and freedom of association and peaceful assembly. “While Burma [Myanmar] faces significant challenges, including the consolidation of its democracy, the United States can, and intends to, use other means to support the government and people of Burma in their efforts to address these challenges,” Obama’s letter said.

Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and democracy icon, helped persuade the West to impose sanctions on Myanmar during her years as a jailed opposition leader. She is now trying to strike a balance between showing her people the economic rewards of a democratic transition while keeping pressure on the country’s generals for further reforms. Some members of the US Congress have expressed concerns about the extent and durability of change in Myanmar and introduced legislation seeking to give lawmakers some influence on the process of easing sanctions.

Rights groups condemned last month’s announcement, saying it forfeited leverage on Myanmar’s military. Officials of the US administration have said the removal of sanctions would not apply to military-to-military assistance, given the extent of the military’s involvement in politics and rights abuses. Aung San Suu Kyi herself has been criticized for doing too little to address the plight of Myanmar’s stateless Rohingya Muslim minority. The US Department of State last month said that several restrictions would remain in place, including barring US visas for Myanmar’s military leaders.

A return visit to Washington last month cemented the nations' improved relationship. During the visit, Obama lifted the decades-old trade tariffs against the country. Removing a state of emergency against a foreign nation is a rare occurrence. The White House still maintains 31 declarations pending in the United States.

Huge jade stone found in Burma...

Giant jade stone uncovered in Myanmar
Sat, 15 Oct 2016 - A giant jade stone weighing 175 tonnes has been uncovered by miners in Myanmar.

The stone is 4.3m (14ft) high and 5.8m (19ft) long, and is reportedly worth an estimated $170m (£140m). It was found in a mine in the jade-producing Kachin state, in the north of the country.

Myanmar, also known as Burma, is the source of nearly all of the world's finest jadeite, a near-translucent green stone. The jade industry is responsible for nearly half of the country's GDP. One of its biggest markets is neighbouring China, where it is known as the "stone of heaven".
