NATO is deploying an additional four battalions of 4,000 troops in Poland and the three Baltic States, according to a report citing US Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work.
Work confirmed the number of troops to be sent to the border with Russia, The Wall Street Journal reports. He said the reason for the deployment is Russia’s multiple snap military exercises near the Baltics States.

“The Russians have been doing a lot of snap exercises right up against the borders, with a lot of troops,” Work said as cited by the Wall Street Journal. “From our perspective, we could argue this is extraordinarily provocative behavior.”

Although there have already been talks about German troops to be deployed to Lithuania, Berlin is still mulling its participation.

“We are currently reviewing how we can continue or strengthen our engagement on the alliance’s eastern periphery,” Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday, in light of a recent poll from the Bertelsmann Foundation that found only 31 percent of Germans would welcome the idea of German troops defending Poland and the Baltic States.

London has not made its mind either, yet is expected to do so before the upcoming NATO summit in Warsaw in July.

Ahead of the deployment, NATO officials are also discussing the possibility of making the battalions multinational, combining troops from different countries under the joint NATO command and control system.

Moscow has been unhappy with the NATO military buildup at Russia’s borders for some time now.

“NATO military infrastructure is inching closer and closer to Russia’s borders. But when Russia takes action to ensure its security, we are told that Russia is engaging in dangerous maneuvers near NATO borders. In fact, NATO borders are getting closer to Russia, not the opposite,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told Sweden’s Dagens Nyheter daily.

Poland and the Baltic States of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have regularly pressed NATO headquarters to beef up the alliance’s presence on their territory.

According to the 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act, the permanent presence of large NATO formations at the Russian border is prohibited. Yet some voices in Brussels are saying that since the NATO troops stationed next to Russia are going to rotate, this kind of military buildup cannot be regarded as a permanent presence.

Russia’s Defense Ministry says it’s ready for a tit-for-tat response to any NATO military activity near Russia’s borders. As Russia’s envoy to NATO Aleksandr Grushko put it, there are no “passive observes” in the Russian armed forces and Moscow would definitely compensate militarily for an “absolutely unjustified military presence.”

This is the initial provocation...and all subsequent actions by NATO as defensive in nature....and advising the Russians to remain on their side of the border. Its amazing that Putin still attempts to frighten those smaller nations with his bravado.

The ones who own and control Washington, (and the media) wants Russia to go to war so they can steal its wealth, but they want it to be fought by the EU fools ... A better name though for the EU than fools, would be the one given by my favorite writer Pepe Escobar: 'The Walking Dead'. The EU has signed their warrant and are marching towards their demise.:oldman:

Yes there's a real desire in Washington for war booty from Russia: derelict buildings and toppled Lenin statues.

Hillary Clinton has openly promised she will go to war directly against Russia over Syria - vowing to shoot down Russian military and civilian aircraft.

The Cold War was exorbitantly profitable to the USA defense industry and it gave total power to the central government in Russia. The establishment of both the USA and Russia want the Cold War back.

And all their poor people too. The USA wants all the poor people of the world here. At least 100 million from South of us, another 100 million minimally from the ME, and 50 million more from Russia.

War booty from Russia? :roflol: Russia's oil isn't worth what it'd cost just to ship it here anymore.

Sometimes Putin reminds me of the sicko little creep of N. Korea. Constantly making threats to seem tough.

That's funny. So you really think the billionaire Putin is suicidal and wants all Russians to die with him, do you?

These are all hollow threats, pointless, like someone holding a grenade in a room threatening to pull the pin as his way of winning an argument. What makes it so funny is people like you think it's real.

"Look out! Putin may decide everyone in the world has to die including himself and all Russians because Putin's insane!" Actually, Putin counts on people like you believing such absurdity. Pointless tough talk, really stupid tough talk.

The USA has made over 70,000 nuclear bombs and missile tips - more than every other country on earth combined. But, hey, we now promise we only have a few thousand left. The most Russia cities and towns we could erase is only about 3,000 to 4,000 - and everyone really should believe that too.

Russian forces: 771,000 members, mostly drunk on Vodka and poorly paid
    NATO forces: 3,585,000 members

    No contest.

The Russia economy is in really BAD shape. Putin has to talk tough in militaristic terms to divert from Russian domestic problems. Maybe he should threaten the Saudi's again - so they lower their price of oil to $10 a barrel. :clapping:

The ones who control Washington have been trying to destroy Russia's economy, so they are using the same method Reagan used against the Soviet Union, but it's not working and they realize it. They tried with sanctions and its destroying the EU and breaking it up. Vladimir Putin used the excuse of the sanctions to impose an embargo on imports, that way they could develop their own resources.

Today Russia is not only the largest timber exporter, but also the largest wheat exporter in the world...something which has hurt the US economy.

Washington had Saudi Arabia lower oil prices, but they ended up destroying all the other oil nations as well as their own fracking industry. They then attacked the Ruble, but again it worked to Russia's benefit since it made them more competitive in the markets.

They realize now that Russia is too big to hurt, so they are resorting to manipulations and bribery for regime changes in countries connected with Russia like the Bric nations. Of course it doesn't matter to the sociopaths in Washington if those countries end up in civil wars.

Frankly I don't see how so much evil can end without a war.

The Ruble has lost half it's value and half of Russians are living in poverty. It's working.

You seem to think no one wants war. War in Europe can be extremely profitable for the USA. We could add a 50% surcharge for weapons.

It would be a nice way to increase oil prices wouldn't it. I think I'll buy some Suncor shares on Monday.

Don't need 'em. It's cheaper to buy them then go to war and occupy a country for them.

That's quite a witty rebuttal there Loki.

You do realize that Russia would die as well. YOU would die. Or do you think Russia would somehow survive? Why?

    - - - Updated - - -

Do you want yours? How many would you?

The only person I see on this forum warmongering and desiring for war is YOU. Yet you keep attacking anyone who has a favorable opinion of the west as if we were marching on Moscow as we speak.
