As a popular Indiana restaurant owner faces deportation under President Trump’s immigration directives, his family becomes the latest in a series of Trump supporters to find campaign promises affecting their lives. “I understand when you’re a criminal and you do bad things, you shouldn’t be in the country. But when you’re a good citizen and you support and you help and you pay taxes and you give jobs to people, you should be able to stay.” Beristain was detained during his routine voluntary check-in at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Indianapolis in February. He immigrated to the United States from Mexico illegally in 1998, deciding not to return after a visit to a family member in California. According to his immigration lawyer, Beristain was in possession of a legal Social Security number, work permit and driver’s license after registering with ICE in 2000. https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-supporter-my-husband-is-being-deported-friday-193439132.html The law is the law. If you voted for Trump knowing you married a law breaking illegal immigrant, you can't demand an exception. If we don't start enforcing our laws and border, why even have a country ? I do feel bad, but when this man decided to take action that resulted in him being here illegally, he was rolling the dice.
Breaking the law should have consequences. Society has functioned this way since time immemorial. It's a relatively recent thing that a major US political party, and its voters, decided to ignore laws that don't benefit their party and power.
I know the process can be tedious and expensive, but you have had 17 years to do some paperwork, and enough money to buy a restaurant, but can't afford the citizenship process? He may have been "with" trump, but did he vote? Shouldn't have been able to as a non citizen, maybe he was with him in spirit?
It's unfortunate, but even "good people" have to follow the law. If I stole a Million dollars and sprinkled it around the poorest neighborhood like Robin hood....I'd still be a thief and doing jail time when caught.
Unfortunately, it is very likely that the man had no legal option to immigrate here permanently. I want our laws followed, but I also want them to be sensible.
After reading this article and a linked one inside, I can only come to the conclusion that something is off here. He was ordered to be deported in 2000 under Clinton. Under Bush, ICE got him a social security card, and some other papers. He has applied for citizenship because he's married to a US citizen and applied in '07. It's now a decade later and most of that was spent under Obamas even more lax immigration standards and programs. Why isn't this guy a citizen already? He actually does pay taxes, employs 20 or so people, and has legal papers. Something is off on all sides here.
Sage and Spim both make excellent points that clearly indicate the story featured in the OP is most likely bogus.
I think this story is real in the sense dude is in jail and possibly being deported, but it feels like there is something missing that tells the whole story.
Always good to hear a Trumper getting what they asked for Enjoyable like the Trumper who complained her Meals on Wheels would be cut ...HILARIOUS!!!!!
If they're Trump supporters then they know he's targeting criminals first and foremost. I would suggest that in the meantime, he needs to work on getting his citizenship. My neighbors just celebrated and had a pig roast and BBQ and invited a few of the people they've met since moving in about a year ago. They celebrated their brother's citizenship becoming legal. Hard working and appreciative these guys are, nice people. Bearstain needs to do the same or his card may be drawn in the coming few years.
That's what I'm always curious about as well. You've been here for well over a decade and now you wanna bitch because you might get deported. And on top of that, you've made enough money to open your own business, PLUS you're making daily revenue. Gimme a break.
almost 2 decades! that's quite a long time. I personally know 4 immigrant peep's well enough to have had the process explained to me, and honestly its quite ridiculous. Its an extremely Long, tedious, expensive process with a lot of room for improvement. Not saying they aren't "sensible" because I understand that there must be a process, but so much of the bureaucracy could be more efficient. (There's a bombshell, government should be more efficient!) With that said, about 700K are naturalized every single year, so its not like it can't be done. given trumps campaign message, it would seem that the majority of illegals would be non-trump types, whatever political party they affiliate with. Agree?
It's a Yahoo story so there are probably some twists and turns in the story as well. It threw me off immediately because Trump is only going after criminals right now, so why would this man or his wife be concerned about him being deported unless he's really a criminal, possibly from back when he first came here...
That's possible, but this story is mostly likely lube for democrats who are still biting pillows after the election.
It's been almost 20 since he first came(came here in 1998 , and he bought his sister-in-laws restaurant that he had worked at for years. Which makes your point still valid. He applied 10 years ago for citizenship, since he's married to a citize but they had been together for years at that point. They have been married since 2000. Why didn't he apply then?
There's nothing on him. Other than violating his visa and staying after deportation order, he's clean. It's so weird. Edit: after a minute I thought- wonder if he did something back home that was catching up with him when he got his tourist visa.
Exactly. I'll have to ask my neighbor how long it took his brother to gain citizenship but I'm almost positive that they said they'd been waiting for about 3 years or so. It was very low number whatever it was. When I said well over a decade, I was talking about all these illegals that are being deported, they've all been here well over a decade and haven't attempted to gain citizenship. Strange that this guy has applied and still hasn't gotten it though. Especially under Obama. I wonder if there's more to his background than meets the yee... *eye
The woman in the OP was a Trump supporter....if she's that stupid, too bad for her....I am DEEEElighted at her situation
I grew up very close to Granger IN where this happened. The story is real. Even the mayor of South Bend wrote an appeal calling him a "model citizen". Trump said that Mexico is not sending their "best people". This man is obviously a drug dealing, rapist criminal. I bet his wife is feeling pretty stupid for voting for the orange russian spy. LOL!!!
I was thinking the same thing, that he could have been running from a crime when he came here in the first place. If not then this man isn't on the radar and Yahoo is just looking to put out something negative towards Trump.
Yes we know. You lefties have made it clear that you're all about women, blacks, gays, and muslims. . .unless they're Republicans... Now we can add illegals to the list.
