But if the Koreans and their atomic bomb are already in the US? For example, in some kind of container in the port of New York or in a leased warehouse in Washington. Or in any other large city in the USA. Maybe even a few bombs. By the way, the North Koreans are ready to die. They are like kamikaze, only Korean. What then?

And by the way. Do not be fooled. You can only shoot down something that hangs on a parachute with an attached radio beacon. In any case, So pass the tests of the American missile defense system

Ahem. This is a very pretty video, but let's stick to real material.

Well... I think it is common that most do not well understand this issue.

The Fission bomb dropped on Hiroshima was roughly 14 thousand tons of TNT. These are firecrackers compared to Fusion bombs. A 20 megaton Fusion bomb is roughly 1500 times the energy of the Hiroshima bomb. The Russian's used to produce these but they stopped because they are just too big. There simply is not point and 4 x 5 megaton bombs do more damage.

One of the Bikini tests (think it was Castle Bravo if memory serves) contaminated 7500 Sq miles. Divide into 3 million Sq miles in the continental US gives you 400.

400 nukes of the Castle Bravo variety then turns the entire US into a red "no go" zone due to radioactive fallout. Russia has thousands pointed our direction.

In fact the US and Russia once had 50,000. This was such overkill that they both agreed to reduce stockpiles.

Most people would not be killed by the initial blast. Most would die because of the lack of non contaminated food and water and through exposure to radiation in general.

One nuclear sub has 16 missiles each with 10 MIRVs = 160 bombs each roughly 5-7 times the punch of Hiroshima. Strike 160 US cities with populations of 500,000 or more off the map and tell me what you are left with.

This is one sub ... and these are baby bombs. In a full scale attack where ballistic missiles (the megaton variety), perhaps 1000 start flying (which represents only a fraction of the Russian arsenal) ? Forget it. It is probably better to be vaporized in the blast than to survive.

First of all, not thousands already. Second of all - number is relatively similar to one that you have. On top of that - likely way not all of them are of such caliber as you described.

This is still a deadly force, capable of ruining our world, civilization and planet, but this is lesser force than one that existed during Cold War. Still the only thing this tool of destruction deserves - is to be deconstructed and disarmed.

Unfortunately we can never eliminate nuclear arsenals entirely, now that practically every country can build them. We must have them as a deterrent, and of course North Korea views its nuclear weapons and its missiles similarly. They're just rather loud and colorful about advertising them.

Nuclear weapons have made the kind of war we experienced previously impossible. We simply can't go to war with any but a non-nuclear proxy country at this point. Give them all nukes and all we would have left is talk and posturing. Ultimately a good thing, though it's annoying to have this constant talk of war. At least that beats the alternative of actually slinging nukes.

Why are you nit picking based on silliness ?? As per your own link Russia has roughly 2000 ballistic missiles ready to go and another 2000 that can be quickly made ready. I used 400 big ones as the number for complete radioactivity but, this number is overkill.

The reality is that half this number would be enough due to contamination migration in the water supply, and weather events such as "rain" ... radioactive rain.

I discussed the relative sizes of SLBM's. When it comes to ICBM's ... do you seriously think there is much of a contamination difference between a 5 megaton bomb and a 1 megaton bomb ? The blast radius of a 5 megaton bomb is not much different from a 1 megaton bomb. The radioactive fallout - in context of the discussion where not 200 (the realistic number needed to turn the entire continental US into a red "no go zone" on the map) but, 1000 are falling (a fraction of the 4500 that are either ready to be fired immediately or can be readied rather quickly).

The reason the Russia reduced it's stockpiles from 45,000 (at the peak) to roughly 1/10th of this amount is not because Russia thought that this was not enough to destroy the US multiple times over. The reason is because it is more than enough to destroy the US many many times over.

Nothing has changed since Barry was in office. All of the latest scare tactics by the liberal media is just that, scare tactics. These new findings are nothing new. It is odd though how slick willy and barry give nukes to maniacs and then the media sits on it until a republican gets into office and then they try to use their old garbage to make the look bad. Luckily, only the Hillary voters fall for it. In 1994 Trump was saying how slick willy outta to do something before NK has the nuclear weapon ready and we have to deal with it then and now here we are.

Now folks, a nuclear bomb does not destroy the Earth and everything living on it. While there are a myriad of different sizes of nuclear bombs few are the monster 50 megaton things. I don't know how large the NorKo's nukes are, but I'd guess about three times stronger than the ones we dropped in WWII. It would probably have a killing radius of a few miles. I don't know how much radiation the thing would spew out, but certainly quite a bit. My point is the Earth will not end if we are hit by a nuke and while the devastation within a few miles radius would be terrible, within 100 miles away, I think, you'd be fine. You'd see the flash however. So I don't think we need to fall on our swords if we are hit by a nuke somewhere, unless you are within a few miles of the blast. Then, well, you'll be toast.

Look ... you started out with "not thousands" and proceeded to post a link that confirmed - "its thousands".

Second - while it is true that the relative size of the payload has been decreased in many cases (and increased in some) ... such that the ave nuke is not the size of Castle Bravo - this does not affect the context which is that the US would be turned into a red "no go zone".

Unless you want another lecture - "do not nit pick with silliness again" :)

Good that in the end you recognized the central premise that there is no winning in a nuclear war with Russia.

A 50 megaton bomb is roughly 3500 times the bang of Hiroshima. The Castle Bravo test spread radiation over 7000 sq. miles.

In a full scale nuclear war, radioactive contamination would turn the US into a red "no go zone" on the map. Most would not die in the blast. They will die due to exposure to radioactive fallout and by the lack of non contaminated food and water ... and the anarchy that would ensue.

Speaking precisely - right now deployed ~1950 missiles armed. This already is not "thousands". Not even two. On top of that it would be a tactical idiocy to have them all reserved for USA only - there are other potential targets, other nuclear-wielding countries included. Therefore I am correct - there is no "thousands" of russian nuclear missiles "aimed" at USA. Fairly sure your nuclear arsenal is not reserved for Russian Federation exclusively as well.

I corrected you, and gave you actual data. My point - is that threat decreases, and did so greatly since the Cold War when there have been actually thousands of armed and aimed missiles.

I never claimed the threat is not deadly anymore, I pointed at that governments of RF and US DO put effort in decreasing the threat of mutual annihilation.

Precisely speaking. In the case of a full out nuclear war there are 1950 ready to go at moments notice (which is thousands already despite your nit pickery) and 2350 that could be made ready to go in short order (and 2700 more that although are retired could be brought out of retirement).

So .. in the case of full scale nuclear war (which is the context of the conversation) there are over 4000 that are either ready to go or can be quickly made ready to go = thousands ... Mr. Nit Picky.

As to our comment of decreased threat. Being able to destroy the 10 times over rather than 50 times over hardly qualifies as much of a decreased thread. In both cases one is dead.

If one is shot in the head 10 times with a bullet. Is this a decreased threat to the person being shot 50 times in the head ?

"in case of war" and "right now" are two different things. One is fact and other is a theory.

And as matter of fact - being shot 10 times is less dangerous than being shot 50 times. In both cases probability of death is almost certain, but in case of 10 shorts it is lower.

Now, I repeat - you gave people incorrect information, of overinflated threat by saying "Russia has thousands (missiles) pointed our direction." Russian Federation does not. That mistake of yours I corrected. If you are interested why - because I dislike people being fed false information, twisted in one or other way for one or other purpose.

As for your opinion about how deadly the yet remaining nuclear arsenal - I in my very first post pointed that this arsenal is still capable of destroying human civilization.

I did not give incorrect information. Do not blame me for you lack of understanding of our own link.

What part of Russia has 4500 nukes that can be fired at the US in the case of full scale war ... do you not understand ?

Since when is 4500 not thousands ?

Since at the present moment only 1950 - and probably even less, since the number is getting decreased constantly - are in armed condition. And not even all of them reserved for USA, as I said. Same as with nuclear weapons of USA.

As for theoretical case of war - there is no guarantee that there will even be time to actually arm and ready for fire the remaining missiles. But theories are what they are - theories. And in discussion one should operate with facts.

Do not blame me for your continued ignorance and denial. The 2350 in the not deployed category are armed - they are just not currently deployed. In a "war"- which is the context of the conversation- The 2350 nukes that are not currently "deployed" would be deployed would Russia desire it.

This makes over 4000 nukes that could be shot at the US in a full scale nuclear war in relatively short order.. Not only do you continue to earn the label of Nit Picker. You are just plain wrong.
