    I once watched a Japanese movie about WWIII. What was striking to me was the sense of helpless they felt as the world's two superpowers had a pissing match. They could only sit and watch as the US and USSR made victims of the entire world.

    Born and raised in the US, I always thought about the Soviets as the bad guys and us as the good guys. But the point of the movie was that we were both the bad guys. I had never really considered how the cold war looked to everyone else.

    Being on this forum and mudwrestling with rabid trump haters gives me a sense of what trump has to put up with

    Because when I get my fill of the midnless leftwing nonsense I just close the keyboard and do something else

    Trump however can't do that and has to dodge incoming attcks EVERY DAY, ALL DAY

    Indeed, but we aren't talking about a "full scale nuclear war" here. As far as I know there are no 50 megaton bombs. Most weapons are in the 1 to three megaton range. A one megaton bomb is still a lot of bomb. If there would be a massive exchange of nuclear weapons life on Earth would end. Life in the Universe is rare. I'd be a shame to destroy life on our planet. We could do that. Let's not.

    What you suggested isn't an entirely bad idea. As the world populates with nuclear weapons, everyone agrees to attack the first country to launch a strike.

    It is mutually assured destruction on steroids.

    Not if they don't want to get nuked too.

    They will just pick a scapegoat and all nuke that. Korea, Israel. That sort of thing.
    The least loved of all nuclear nations will get it.

    Kind of like how Iraq and Afghanistan didn't do 9/11 but got nailed for it anyway.

    Indeed we are talking about a full scale nuclear war.... as per the OP. One megaton is about 75 times the energy of the Hiroshima bomb. The thing about the blast radius is that it does not increase linearly with increased yield. This is part of the reason that they went away from the monster 20 MT bombs. The extra yield just was not worth the effort.

    The same rational likely applies to radioactive contamination - while the blast of a larger yield is more concentrated the area of contamination is not going to increase with yield in a linear fashion. In a previous post I calculated (using Castle Bravo data) 400 nukes would contaminate every square mile in the continental US with radiation. The actual number would be much smaller ... probably something like 200 nukes as the contamination would migrate through weather and water pathways.
