https://nypost.com/2018/09/20/shirtless-dad-son-allegedly-gun-down-neighbor-over-trash-fight/ Here we have three idiots, two with guns. Arguing over a mattress. Guy without gun keeps threatening to kill two guys with guns. Guys with guns threaten to shoot them. Both claim to be Standing Their Ground. Eventually guys with guns kill guy without gun, perhaps cause guy without gun came "too close" to other guys, but video doesnt show. This is why many folks believe gun ownership should require some training, specifically in conflict de-escalation.
Pray tell, why did the individual who did not have a firearm, choose to escalate the situation instead of backing down? The article itself states that the unarmed individual chose to continue arguing, shouting that escalating tensions despite the two he was arguing with having visible firearms present. A sane individual does not deliberately argue with someone when they have a firearm present and potentially aimed at them. A sane, rational person would make every effort to back down and leave the scene immediately, rather than continuing the confrontation.
I'll support any mandatory training prerequisite for gun ownership that is widely available, free of charge and graded on attendence only. Expensive or otherwise difficult-to-attain mandatory training is unconstitutional imo, as it could -and likely would- be used as a method of biased and/or inequitable restriction.
This position runs counter to that proposed in OP. You began by suggesting that de-escalation training could have prevented the shooting. Which is entirely reasonable and likely correct. However, now you seem to be suggesting that they shouldn't have had guns to begin with. Could you clarify your position? Are you suggesting that training could/should be used as a means to prevent 'idiots' from having access to firearms?
Regardless, these guys are rightfully facing murder charges. No doubt they will be convicted. No kind of training can stop stupidity and willful recklessness. https://www.easttexasmatters.com/ne...lls-neighbor-over-trashed-mattress/1463976006
Well, one of them was packing at the time. The other ran to the house to get a shotgun after the argument started per the story (not just the video, which starts midway into the incident). Reading it, everybody involved was an idiot. https://www.star-telegram.com/news/local/community/fort-worth/article218728710.html
https://www.star-telegram.com/news/local/community/fort-worth/article218728710.html I find that the most accurate articles about incidents seems to come from closer sources. The above is from a Fort-Worth paper, not quite Abilene, but closer than the NY Post.
I love how this is titled. "...over trash dispute". It might have started that way, but the guy was killed for being an overbearing dick who threatened two armed "men". Anyways, the shooter and son were stupid to invite the guy to "take a swing", that makes him liable for the actions. The son is at fault for his taunting. I don't know how this will play out really. Gotta have a little more context of what happened before the guns came out, why the guy with the guy felt the need to brandish the weapon. I see that the dead guy was much bigger and probably more limber to fight the smaller portly fellow, so there is that intimidation factor. Oh well, other than gun grabbers playing up this story, it wont make much noise cause of the white on white violence that doesn't get sensationalized.
Well, the above isn't the whole story either. Not sure anybody but the two murderers and the woman know the whole story. From what I've read (see Star-Telegram link in one of my other posts), the couple(Howard and Box) put a mattress into the dumpster to get rid of it. Somebody (presumably one of the Millers (shooters)) took the mattress out of the dumpster and put it in the couple's yard. The couple put it back. The older Miller took it back out, and again put it in the couple's yard, this time in front of them. They yelled at him to put it back. He refused and drew his pistol. At some time Howard's brother handed him a baseball bat, and at some time, Miller's son came out with a shotgun. (don't know which came first, as it's BEFORE the video). Then the video which you can watch yourself. The questions I want to know: 1) who was in control of the dumpster? Did it belong to Miller, and did the couple illegally put the mattress their? Or is it a community dumpster, and Miller was being a jerk about it?
It's too bad too. All he had to do was go back in the house, call the cops, and show them the video of the two men brandishing firearms over a mattress. Instead, he chose to be Mr. Badass.
I think there is a part between "They yelled at him to put it back. He refused..." then the point of "and drew his pistol." It seems off. So if this ever comes out, if anything, I see Miller being justified. If he is just pulling it out just cause of being yell out (depending what was said), then Miller is done.
Soooo your recommendation is free gun classes for everybody? Awesome! I agree. We can make it part of High School curriculums.
Well, according to the story, they had never met before. The couple only lived there since April, and this happened the first of September.
That you don't acknowledge the pishtake demonstrates the nature of the problem. You fellows are indeed extremists.
