What if the attacker is bigger/younger/faster/multiple or any other scenario where retreating increases the exposure of the victim to violence?
if you can reasonably get away, you should. if you can't, that's a different story. you should also be required by law to disengage from a conflict when it appears it may become violent...before self-defence might even be neccessary
Any third party with a brain could have talked the parties down in that tragedy in the op. Be that as it may, I agree, if it looks like you can't bring sanity to a situation, and if you can get out, and you're one of the involved parties, get out.
They are not being defended in this discussion, so do not even make the assumption that they are. The more pertinent question is why the unarmed individual, who was confronted with the fact that the two individuals he was arguing with were armed, chose to continue the argument and not back down like a rational individual would. Such would suggest serious mental illness, if not even a firearm being pointed at them is enough to deescalate the situation.
I’m guessing because he didn’t think the two chicken ***** would be coward enough to shoot him over an argument. Do you pull your gun whenever you get into an argument with someone?
Every time I read these stories regarding "stupid people with firearms" the logic just doesn't click with me, even though the situation was unfortunate. "Stupid people" are part of society. I almost crashed my custom built classic Mustang the other day because some "idiot" was texting on her phone while driving and tried to swerve in to me changing lanes causing me to have to swerve off of the road for a few seconds. We as a society basically allow "stupid people" to operate freely. Our driving tests in the US are a joke, any idiot can get a drivers license and go out an operate on public roadways even if they don't even really know how to drive. If we want to regulate "stupid people" then there are a whole lot of other areas we as a society need to focus on before we get down the list to gun ownership. If we are perfectly fine with allowing a stupid 16 year old girl to drive down the street while actively trying to take bunny ear pictures of herself in the car then we have to just accept that there are some stupid people out there who will have possession of firearms. It's hypocritical as a society for us to care about stupid people doing some stuff which is dangerous to themselves and others while simultaneously ignoring other stuff they do which is equally dangerous.
You’d think they’d Darwin themselves from the gene pool, but stupidity seems to be a product of some glitch in the human mind, a glitch that can be mitigated, but can’t be eliminated by training. For a long time I collected snippets of stupid criminal stories having thoughts of publishing them in comedy sort of coffee table book, but others, quicker than I, have had the same thoughts seen if you query on the topic; https://www.criminaljusticeschools.com/blog/21-dumbest-criminals-of-the-21st-century-so-far/ For those doing stupid things that get them killed, there are the Darwin awards. A long time friend of mine, a polar opposite in political views, did agree on one thing when discussing accidental gun death stats a couple years ago by noting in many cases the cause of death shouldn’t have been counted as an accidental shooting death, but stupidity.
Is it common in the united states for individuals to believe that a firearm being pointed at them is not a threat of deadly force? If such is the case, then why is brandishing a firearm regarded as a crime?
Not something that can be eliminated by training. Give someone a teacup and in the right situation they will use it to punctuate an arguement.
I see you avoided answering my question. It’s amazing me the level of arrogance you have where you ignore my question and think I’ll answer yours. Answer my fcuking question. Then and only then will I be happy to answer any of your questions. Otherwise....pi$$ off.
requiring licenses (granted only after proving suitability to be a parent and passing an IQ and drug test) to breed would make the USA much safer than gun control laws
Yeah but that sort of thing conjures up images of some terrible dystopian society where the government has the power to actually tell people who can and cannot reproduce... It's basically selective breeding, and that sort of thing isn't exactly good in practice even if the logic behind it is sound.
That's fine as long as we are not biased and use this logic in regards to everything stupid or irresponsible that people do on a daily basis. A huge chunk of auto accidents are the result of humans doing stupid stuff while attempting to operate a motor vehicle. Hell a huge chunk of fatalities or serious injuries overall are the result of humans winning "Darwin Awards". Many of which serve no actual purpose other than recreation. Just the other day I was browsing the internet and came across a youtube channel of some British parkour kids who run around Europe recording themselves illegally free climbing skyscrapers. While entertaining to me to watch and obviously exhilarating for them to do, at the end of the day that sort of thing is stupid. I'd feel bad for them and their families if one of them were to fall 500ft to their deaths but I mean there is no real logical reason for anybody to be doing something like that. Almost every thing people do in life carries some risk. If we are going to call accidental gun deaths "Darwin Awards" then we also need to include motorcycle accidents, skydiving, surfing, boating, etc and basically anything risky that people do on a daily basis because at the end of the day the majority of people don't NEED to to any of those things, they just do it for entertainment.
Idiots with guns. Idiots with cars. Idiots with drugs. Idiots with alcohol. Idiots with a camera doing stupid things to post on youtube. You cannot stop idiots by removing one of their toys. Stop trying to solve problems by removing symptoms. The problem here is idiots, not guns.
For the simple reason that the question presented on the part of yourself pertained to details about myself, which is not relevant to the discussion. Unless it is being stated that details pertaining to yourself specifically are also relevant to the discussion. The question presented did not pertain to yourself, rather it pertained to the quality of character of people in the united states in general. This individual, when having more than one firearm aimed at him, made the conscious decision to continue asking in an aggressive manner, as if he had no concern for his own well being. This suggests serious and significant mental instability and illness, suggesting that he presented a legitimate threat to others. If this is normal behavior in the united states, if being confronted with a shotgun aimed at your face does not cause one to pause and deescalate the situation, perhaps the united states is far more dangerous than was initially believed.
Hahahaha...your arrogance knows no limits I see. Actually....shooting someone who poses no threat to you suggests serious and significant mental instability and illness....not to mention major levels of cowardice. Not surprising you side with the cowards.
Exactly. We have around 330 million people in America give or take. Based on pure statistics and logic there are going to be a decent number of people living in our society who are "stupid". A whole lot of people do a whole lot of really stupid things on a daily basis. If we as a society want to actually start combating "stupidity" then I have a whole laundry list of places to start and firearms are pretty far down on the totem pole.
