A cautionary tale from Venezuela. I would direct your attention that the vast majority were confiscated by force, like happened in New Orleans, post Katrina. Venezuelans regret gun ban, 'a declaration of war against an unarmed population' By Hollie McKay | Fox News Facebook Twitter Flipboard Comments Print Email In this April 13, 2010 file photo, members of the National Revolutionary Militia hold up their weapons and a painting of Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez at an event marking the 9th anniversary of Chavez's return to power after a failed 2002 coup, in Caracas, Venezuela. (AP Photo/Ariana Cubillos, File) CUCUTA, Venezuela/Colombia border – As Venezuela continues to crumble under the socialist dictatorship of President Nicolas Maduro, some are expressing words of warning – and resentment – against a six-year-old gun control bill that stripped citizens of their weapons. “Guns would have served as a vital pillar to remaining a free people, or at least able to put up a fight,” Javier Vanegas, 28, a Venezuelan teacher of English now exiled in Ecuador, told Fox News. “The government security forces, at the beginning of this debacle, knew they had no real opposition to their force. Once things were this bad, it was a clear declaration of war against an unarmed population.” Under the direction of then-President Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan National Assembly in 2012 enacted the “Control of Arms, Munitions and Disarmament Law,” with the explicit aim to “disarm all citizens.” The law took effect in 2013, with only minimal pushback from some pro-democracy opposition figures, banned the legal commercial sale of guns and munitions to all - except government entities. Chavez initially ran a months-long amnesty program encouraging Venezuelans to trade their arms for electrical goods. That year, there were only 37 recorded voluntary gun surrenders, while the majority of seizures - more than 12,500 – were by force. This is precisely the scenario pro gun people put forward and the left mocks as unrealistic. That's why they are silent on this
As a gun owner, I'm kind of surprised that this old myth that America is threatened by a total gun ban, rather silly. This shows a lack of common sense.
And you are either demonstrating a total lack of understanding of the reality of firearm control, or are like many anti's are simply ignoring what you would like too se happen to those around yourself hoping you will not be noticed when it hits the fan.
This would be why.... If there is no one on this forum who's expressed a desire to confiscate all guns then no one should expect to hear from anyone.
It appears not all of them and only after a lawsuite was filed. It was confiscation without due process. Politicians on both sides are supporting these "red flag laws" that strip citizens of rights and property, having committed no crimes and police have already killed at least one man in a red flag case. So they are already engaged in unconstitutional infringments. Why any doubt that a Government willing to violate constitution rights in a tyrannical fashion, would be content to stop at a certain point, is baffling. The Government never gives back power, only accumulates and seeks ever more. The people called "conspiracy theorist" will eventually be proven right all along. N.O. Police Returning Guns Confiscated Post-Katrina | Fox News https://www.foxnews.com/story/n-o-police-returning-guns... Apr 19, 2006 · NEW ORLEANS – Under pressure from the National Rifle Association, police this week began returning guns confiscated after Hurricane Katrina.
“Ad hoc gun seizures are also unlikely to happen there, or anywhere else, again. On the heels of that DOJ investigation, the city’s police department made sweeping reforms. President Bush signed bipartisan legislation“to prohibit the confiscation of a firearm during an emergency or major disaster,” except temporarily “as a condition for entry into any mode of transportation used for rescue or evacuation.” And Compass, the NOPD superintendent who’d ordered the gun confiscation, is long gone. He resigned less than three weeks after issuing his fateful order.”
Of course not, but they are an erosion of peoples rights and you can be certain it wont stop there. Why would it?
You and others are trying the straw man trick here. Few if any of us have said anti gun nuts want all guns banned. Most if not all of us think you want to emulate countries that severely limit types of guns, numbers of guns and at worst want to make owning a gun so legally cumbersome that we will just throw in the towel and say screw it. A perfect example is my situation. I'm getting older and am dowsizing and as part of that I want to divest myself of some of my large gun collection. No longer can I just put an add in the paper and sell them. I have to sell to or go through a licenced dealer which means I can't sell my guns at fair price value without tons of headaches. The anti gun nuts want to make buying a gun just as difficult so people will just say it's not worth the hastle.
And under the red flag laws do people lose their guns forever or do they get them back when it’s deemed they aren’t a danger to themselves or anyone else?
Regardless, you are still deprived of property with no due process. The onus becomes yours to PROVE you are not a danger. The opposite of presumption of innocence. And how long is that process and how costly?
Certainly not respecting legal rights contained in the Constitution. Due process - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Due_process Due process is the legal requirement that the state must respect all legal rights that are owed to a person. Due process balances the power of law of the land and protects the individual person from it. When a government harms a person without following the exact course of the law, …
Yep. It means you get a day in court. There are lots of ways rights can be violated prior to that day in court
