Because, at heart their leadership is mean spirited and would also like to rule the world. I know this for a fact. I know what's going on right now in parts of Africa. Mean spirited people doing things that are just plain dumb in Africa, because they can. They take Japan, because its there.

Greece. Best food, beautiful beaches. And they've already collapsed so there is no need to fear one.

As Adam Smith once observed, there is a great deal of ruin in a nation.

Then where would you go? Things could get really ugly here, if one or both of those outcomes happens and I'm sure you don't want to fend off the Zombie Apocalypse at your front door everyday looking for basic food and water, and more than willing to kill you for it.

And, this is in the "Good Times":

Now, just imagine what that would look like in the "Bad Times." You can multiply what you just saw by a factor of 1,000. No jobs. No income. People who are now desperate for the basics of life, not a cheap $200 television. In the "Good Times," you would think they could manage this peacefully and orderly. All of these people had food in their refrigerators and clean water to drink. Yet, this is how they behaved when they thought something "important" was on the line and they might be deprived of it.

Examining this behavior in the "Good Times" and it becomes quite clear that your house will be up for grabs every single night from Zombies far worse than these. How do you define against dozens at a time? Or, possibly hundreds at a time in a single night?

    Can't happen in America?:

Venezuela, is "America." Central America, but American nonetheless. Thus, this already happened "here."

So, where would you go and why?

I guess catching them on the rebound could prove to be rather profitable for some - but the timing has to be right. They are still dealing with obscene levels of unemployment and a total lack incoming liquidity participation from other international players. I think Greece, has seen better days and I doubt it will ever recover and could even produce even more ruins - except, modern looking ones.

I am looking with the eyes of a retiree. If I were a go-getter I would choose Hong Kong. The Chinese are taking over the world and Hong Kong is well positioned and friendly for an English speaker. The food is very good too, but there is very little culture. It also gets a tad hot and humid.

I would stay with those who want to build a real strong nation learning from the errors of the past . New Constitution. For starters... No 2nd Amendment. No Electoral College. No voter suppression. No wall...

    We'll do just fine.

but you couldnt afford to live there.

The situation involves being what the brits call "skint". You wouldnt have the money to rent a flat in hong kong. You'd go there and immediately be living rough on the street. Your money will be worthless pieces of federal reserve toilet paper.

Air quality and population size relative to developed land. How does that work?

I think you are right about the ability to "live like a king" in Southeast Asia, given a "standard" US retirement income. Things are quite a bit less expensive there in most cases.

I see the other side you mention now.

    Switzerland?

And, difficult to breathe the air - don't forget! But, yeah - the 19th century belonged to the UK, the 20th century belong to the US and the 21st century is said to belong to China. And, they are off to one heck of a start with GDP threatening to hold at 6.4%. What would really push China's economy further would be them cutting back on the "knock offs" and "cheap product" philosophies and start really producing quality home grown exportable electronics, etc. Trade agreements with the West being what they are might inhibit their true potential, however. China's attitude and philosophy towards industrialization and quality control would also have to change. But, these are some of the things the experts say are in the making in China, right now.

As I already explained, most of the good places to go are good because the US is around. Remove the US from the equation and none of those nations are safe, either from an economic standpoint or a security one.

There is no place to go.

I hear Costa Rica is a nice place to retire. But if the SHTF, I'd bunker it out, am already in a fairly rural area and too old to pack up everything and fight to get out.

It is clear you like extreme and remote. There's nothing on Baker except very strange looking trenches of some kind. The look man made, though.

Hmmmm. I wonder about that in more ways than one. A rather Americentric version of current events. I think you might mean to say that there is no place to go to maintain the American Way of Life. Still, there are some places around the world that have a strong enough currency and economy. No doubt, we do import literal tons of stuff from around the world, but we also export quite a bit as well which would be slack picked up by other countries in those places that could be landing pads for American Migrants should all hell break loose here.

There you go, now that's the spirit.

However, I was being more practical than romantic. For families with children who will need life predicated on an education and a functional economy, fighting until the death may impart a slight amount of angst among such individuals seeking to protect their family and their future.

But, yes. Sticking it out to the bitter end, fighting off people trying to suck gas out of your vehicle so they can use it in theirs, smashing in your windows at 3am to steal your last loaf of bread because they believe you are sleeping or just breaking down your door to scavenge what they can from your refrigerator when you were out hunting for food that day, might be the right thing to do for a lot of people. It would be a hard as hell life and it would no doubt shorten one's lifespan tremendously, but yeah - I get the Patriotic nature of it, no doubt. I understand.

Well the world economy is Americentric. We're the largest debtor nation in the history of the world and if we suddenly stop paying on our bills, as your scenario imagined, the entire world economy is going to collapse. The world has been under a Brit-American world order for quite a while, it may take decades to adapt to life without that. In the mean time, the entire world is going to be poor, hungry, and chaotic...just about everywhere.
