Yes, that's a fair assessment. Just that if the dollar crumbles, the problem will be the vast population that used to subsist on benefits in order to feed themselves.

You don't want to be in New York when the dollar is no longer valuable. You won't want to be in any major city when that happens. You'll be swamped with people who have never really cared all that much about supporting themselves, and have no means of doing it anyways. They will be the first to go feral.

I would live in the hills and forests right here in Maine where I live now. I wouldn’t go anywhere.

I've heard that as well about Costa Rica and Columbia. Though, the whole "drug cartel" history would cause me to wonder. But, ya gotta do what you gotta do to survive.

Baker Island has a day beacon on it and that's about it; it's hot, arid and quiet; it was used originally for guano mining until the early 1900's. An air strip put in during WWII is overgrown and unusable and yes, it's very remote. As you can imagine, money has no meaning there.

Who wants to pitch in to buy an island? Although the list shows some of them are only a lease.

Japan is beautiful. I never had an issue with air quality. Yokohama was a huge hub for American teachers.

It's a lot more laid back, easy and cheap lifestyle. Philippines is beautiful and cheap and so is Malaysia. Your money goes a long, looooooong way is those places.

    :)

I loved it there.... Never had an issue. The people treated us great. It's a great jump off point for train travel all over the Europe.

You're assuming that you'd have money, when the scenario requires that you don't.

Would you want to live in the Philippines without a pot to piss in?

Ten years ago, Venezuelans were rich compared to their neighbors. Now they are lucky to have something to eat.

The question was where would you go. I said where I would go as I am discussing MY situation, not anyone else's.

Yea, I have contacts in the PI and all over SE Asian where I could literally melt into the countryside and live a very quiet and peaceful life.

If the entire US was irradiated or something, I guess I'd look to move to Iceland or Chile or Mongolia or some place everyone else wasn't migrating to.

But I figure in any 'conventional' social collapse scenario, no where in the world is gonna be much better off than anywhere else. Might as well make a stand here. If I dont try to keep some civilization around me, who will?

I've been to both, and umm... yeah, I already said my destination would be the Philippines. Still, we both know you're not going to melt into the countryside. You'll stand out like a pile of dog **** plopped on top of a wedding cake.

And the countryside? Have you ever been to the countryside there? There's dick all and nothing to do for a living. In the Phillipines, the only employment is running a sari sari, and in SE Asia, you wouldnt make enough to pay the gas bill for your tuk tuk.

    OP

I have a very strong sense that the entire western world is on the brink of bankruptcy or some other kind of fiscal cataclysm, and that includes the Eurozone, so you can rule that out. And you wouldn't wanna go the the middle east or anywhere in Asia; so it looks like just the antipodean and Asean zones? Standing room only? lol

Me not being American, I will tell you that I'd take in an American refugee if they are not loud and obnoxious. It would also help if they happen to be an attractive female.

Sorry about that, but my response is appropriate for such an outrageous hypothetical scenario.

The US dollar is basically valuable because of the petrodollar, which is not going to last forever.

If you were to go to the US, what you would find is some very serious problems in the municipal infrastructure, and only when you get to the suburbs do you start seeing the real wealth of the country. That is all propped up by a dollar that is on much shakier ground that a lot of people realize. It continually loses value so what happens is that the federal reserve keeps interest rates low while printinng out oodles of it to pay off debts.

The math demands that this can't continue. Something that loses value is not a good investment, so treasury bonds are paid off by raising the national debt.

As for your attractive female refugee, you can keep your American women. One thing the muslims have correct is in saying that western women are sluts and whores. If you want one of those, well then you can buy a dozen of them. That's how cheap and disgusting they are.

Where would I go? Probably a work camp, concentration camp, or an end of life camp is where I and many others would go.

Yea, for months at a crack. I wouldn't be working. Lots of Expats and other people there. It's not uncommon at all to see Americans, Aussies and others. Wonderful places.

You may recall that Ted Cruz brought the United States right to the brink of default in the middle of a global depression singlehandedly.

    .....and they re elected him,.........

Money, indeed would seem to have little meaning there. However, I do see a fairly well paved and marked runway of about 6,000 ft. I also note two above ground fuel depots - looks like Jet fuel tanks to me. Noticed no turbines on the ground, so you might not have much company after you settle in - except those from the resort on the east side.

I was thinking if the USA is out of the picture economically almost all other countries will feel it bad and many will collapse, and almost all will be loath to accept US economic refugees. They got to take care of their own. Most likely it'll be SOL when SHTF, fend for yourself and yours. Hard living out of a ruck, death on your heels every day.
