And Jews! I went to a predominantly Jewish high school where Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Chuck Schumer, Bernie Sanders, Carol King, and dozens and dozens of other great achievers like me LOL
the idea that "no money means a life of poverty and ignorance", is utter bullshit. just ask the Chinese immigrants to NYC
Discrimination plays an important part. You are pointing out that Chinese immigrants are smart and do very well. That is their stereotype and that is how they are viewed. Brown people are stereotyped as not smart enough and lazy etc.I remember an Asian students ones complaining that everyone thinks he’s so smart and I told her it’s a hell of a lot better than everyone thinking you’re stupid. People internalize stereotypes
yes, many black & hispanic kids not only internalize stereotypes, but they actively promote and fuel them, by condemning those from their group who do try to achieve and therefore transcend negative stereotypes. Ive seen it with my own eyes, growing up in NYC public schools. very often, black and hispanic kids saw academic success as "acting white", and they would attack black and hispanic kids who did their homework and actually tried to achieve. when a community is that masochistic and self-destructive, throwing money at the problem may not be able to fix it. much more dramatic solutions may be required
sure, lots, its competitive i'm sure in NY to separate yourself. But i'd like to ask you as a teacher, do YOU know who the gifted kids are, test or no test? Now maybe its different everywhere but In my example it happened early in 2nd grade, the teacher pulled us in for a conference: She said "your kid gets it" , "what do you mean, gets it?" "I mean she gets 2nd grade, she could be in 3rd or 4th now and not struggle, we should test her for the gifted program" Basically she was identified based on her classroom performance, then tested after, it turned out great.
7 teachers in my family, and a sizable Latino population, the stereotypes are a bit different from what i'm told. Asians for sure are labled as smart/hard working. In college the first bit of advice is if your class is full of asian kids, try to transfer to another class because the curve will be a killer. In my circle brown people are most certainly not considered lazy, quite the opposite, although ESOL is a priority in some schools due to heavier than normal migrant populations. There is another group that falls into the lazy category for stereotypes along with measurable negative peer pressure for being good in school but that can't be discussed outside of the home. One last comment getting back on track. I think getting rid of any gifted or advanced classroom is a terrible idea no matter how the demographics work out, you would literally be forced to slow down the advanced kids progress and allow the less mentally gifted children to set the pace, that's an awful idea.
https://www.testprep-online.com/gifted-children-tests The New York City Gifted & Talented Test (NYC G&T) is administered by the NYC Department of Education (DOE) to students aged 4-7 for entry into grades K-3.
i grew up in the middle 80s through the 90s. went to school with lots of Chinese kids living in poverty. they succeeded anyway!!! why? cause poverty does not guarantee a future of ignorance and lack of opportunuty. if you surround yourself with people who believe in themselves and want to achieve, YOU will achieve. if however you feel like a loser and can never do well, you will forever fail
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a multiple choice, primarily nonverbal test used to assess cognitive development among children in grades K-12 The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) is a nonverbal test that assesses general ability and is often used to identify gifted and talented children. The NNAT questions are made up of symbols and/or shapes, require few instructions, and evaluate nonverbal reasoning and problem solving abilities in children aged 5 to 17.
I completely agree with you. I was tested in the 4th grade if I remember correctly. No tutoring, no prep, no rich parents. The gifted program I was put in was a part of the public school. Again, it had nothing to do with wealth. I also remember the test being a lot of things like matching shapes, recognizing patterns, things like that. Not rote memorization or anything which could be "tutored". Newsflash ---- there are poor white people too. And according to Biden there are also poor kids who are just as smart as white kids Seriously, you can't make this stuff up It says more about you than it does about me if you think I mean black people shouldn't have kids when I say poor people shouldn't have kids. That does seem to be the idiotic argument some folks here are trying to make. @Ronstar has someone hacked your account? You made three posts I agree with in this thread. Hell must have frozen over
sorry but its a fact that Asians have a higher poverty rate than whites in most states https://www.kff.org/other/state-ind...Hawaiian and Pacific Islander","sort":"desc"} in many states its more than double the rate of whites
The high earning Asians are not living in NYC. The poor Asians are living in Chinatown. Ever been to NYC?
We are talking about the gifted and talented program. And I sourced that the New York City Gifted & Talented Test (NYC G&T) is administered by the NYC Department of Education (DOE) to students aged 4-7 for entry into grades K-3. So it starts at 4.
no, we are talking about a lot more than that The plan includes all elementary school gifted programs, screened middle schools and some high schools — with the exception of Stuyvesant High School and the city’s seven other elite high schools
I was raised my a single father... a police officer during the day, a lawn mower at night... Nobody tutored me. I just paid attention in school cause if I didnt I'd get my ass beat. Fact is, this is more equality of outcome instead of equality of opportunity, like everything else the left is trying to push.
No worries, I am sure they will keep the gifted programs. There may be a slight modification to the entry requirements to account for diversity....
Liberals and Moderates and most Conservatives want Equality of Opportunity. They want all students, all Americans to have the same opportunities to achieve and excel. Progressives, on the other hand, want equality of OUTCOME & RESULTS. They don't care how its achieved. They certainly don't want people to have to work their asses off to achieve it. They prefer to simply take from those who HAVE achieved, and give to those who simply cant or wont.
https://statisticalatlas.com/place/New-York/New-York/Household-Income http://www.utrc2.org/sites/default/files/pubs/Changing-Demographics-of-Taxi-Workforce.pdf The Chinese aint poor. Add to that, that half of the cab drivers are from either Bangladesh, Pakistan or India = Asian. So if you see a Chinese,... than on average they are well off.
