Or maybe it’s just a family that wants to have a child. Families have been doing this for a while now.

The closest thing we’ve seen to designer kids at this point were the twin girls in China made to be immune to HIV, I believe. Pretty sure the researcher/scientist has since been arrested. If it isn’t happening in China, it won’t be happening anywhere else, at least not for a long time.

Well not exactly, two people so effed up they don't know what sex they are paid money for sperm from a third party so they could make their own live toy so they could gain confirmation for their mutual neuroses.

I give it ten years before rich people in places like India, China, and Russia start designing their own kids. If it's not happening clandestinely already. But I think the technology just isn't there yet.

If rich people want something, it's eventually going to become legal somewhere.

yep, however, my post was/is in reply to "in 20 or 30 years from now"...

so quite possible things will change along that front, considering the pace with which we're moving with everything else...

People in India have been forbidden to plan for a preferred gender for a while now. The population statistics started to become so unbalanced that they had to put a stop to selective abortions based on gender.
The same trend started to emerge in China, especially with the one child initiative of a while back.

Medical tourism is always going to try to meet the demands that deep pockets will help motivate.

Fair point. I’m skeptical that 20-30 years would be enough. We used to think we’d have flying everythings by the year 2000.
Guess it’s plausible, but I’m not counting on it.

There’s room for people to deviate from the accepted course. All good as long you/me/we aren’t hurting anyone.

It will be a routine part of every pregnancy by 2050 or before. Who wouldn't want a genius child that won't get sick? And it's still yours.

    agree with the first sentence...

last sentence, nah, 'normal' is best, same for pets (tabby's are best, pure breeds are just lap candy for those that lack self confidence)...

The guy who said that was Sikorsky, who had just invented the Helicopter from the Autogyro. He and several others underestimated how difficult helicopters are to fly and so may have leapfrogged technology to now, when the computerized and more stable drones are beginning to show us the way

I've had both and found no difference. Animals, unlike people, love you unconditionally if you love them back.

You'd prefer a "normal" child with "normal" cystic fibrosis or some other congenital disorder that will kill him at an early age?

no mind, i'll just qualify that the 'edited' part is not liked, nor what i said... medical defects are not the norm

Because they aren't bred properly and we sell "culls" cheap instead of putting them down as was done up until this century. It takes a tough man to make a German Shepherd without hip dysplasia

I don't think the people living in it would notice any difference. We'd have fewer people in wheelchairs and not nearly as many funerals with young people as parents but we'd probably go home to our robotized residences and jet off to a terraformed Mars for a vacation without a second thought afterwards

Have you ever been involved with a Downs Syndrome child? You get to see the world through a whole new set of eyes, and they see the beauty in it.

I don't think anyone would want a child to suffer through an illness, but there is nothing wrong with 'less than perfect' kids.

Do you have any actual evidence? Because this just sounds like stuff you were told and never bothered to actually check on any of it.[/QUOTE] Worked in this field for over 40 years.

Well said, I'm surprised by the number of people in this forum who are OK with this.

Sadly, I'm not surprised at all. The leftist leaders are more than willing to let the proletariat do all the sex drugs and rock roll they want until they've got control and then Katy bar the door because they'll start trying to regulate sex drugs and rock and roll

i'm a conservative repub and i don't see any issue with this nor abortion for that matter...

this issue is akin to gun control...

it's not for you to decide what's best for me...

A child entering the world with two parents that apparently are well enough off to take of them isn’t a bad thing.

I’d worry about the parents that don’t want their child or don’t have the resources to take care of a child. We can help the later but I haven’t a clue about the former.
