You fallaciously assume that owning a gun is a good option for self defense. It isn't. In fact, owning a gun increases your chances of being a homicide or suicide victim. Poor people would not benefit from owning a gun. Just the opposite.
How come LA and NYC, with similar strict rules have a much lower homicide rate than Chicago? How come the ten felonies that happen when someone travels from Illinois to Indiana and back again, selling those Hoosier handguns to gangs in Chicago aren't sufficient deterrent to the illegal gun trafficking?

Except for the fact that those present on the forums have been told, time and time again, that criminals can easily travel to neighboring states and exploit their lack of firearm-related restrictions to acquire firearms, and take them back to use and/or sell in their home states where the restrictions are much more significant. those present have been told that state-level restrictions are useless, as only federal-level restrictions can do any good whatsoever in preventing criminals from gaining access to firearms. However such federal-level restrictions are not going to be implemented for the foreseeable future. Barack Obama failed to implement any new firearm-related restrictions on the federal level during the time the liberal democratic party possessed both the house and senate. There is no reason to believe Donald Trump will be any different, meaning nothing is going to come about at all. The only restrictions that will continue to be present are local-level restrictions that are ultimately useless, and rendered nonexistent by a simple change of venue. Last year the city of Chicago experienced nearly eight hundred homicides, the majority of them committed with illegally possessed firearms, despite the strict firearm-related restrictions the city has in place. The country of England has always experienced very low firearm-related crime rates compared to the united states, even prior to the implementation of their strict laws and various restrictions. This argument has been thoroughly debunked countless times over. The methodology that was utilized in reaching these conclusions was flawed from the very start, by counting firearms in the home to include those that the perpetrator brought with them for the explicit purpose of killing the intended victim.
Thanks for your service. I agree, from my point of view, the Federal Government has no business being involved in welfare, education, etc. Their primary function is defense of country and interstate commerce, the rest is state's rights.
