Every police agency will tell you if being robbed give up the loot and nobody gets hurt. None will tell you to try pulling a gun out of your purse or pocket. None. In businesses we are told if the robbers get in and out in under four minutes the chance of injury is negligent. Gunfire attracts attention they do not want and ups the ante if they are caught.
Nothing I own is worth anyone getting shot over.

 

Thank God someone is using sense for a change. What you say is true. Those who brag about their guns are dreamers with weak characters and most likely an inferiority complex. Guns facilitate violence and increase the risk of death/murder exponentially.

The goal as I see it is the desire to get access to guys away from the irresponsible, the mentally ill and criminals so we are left with easy access only to responsible people. Most hunters are responsible, Dick Cheney nonwithstanding. They learn to shoot because they actually hope to bring home the food and we need them for deer population control since we've elliminated their natural predators.
The mentally ill will require a conscious effort to restore that which Reagan tore down but it can be done.
The criminals get their guns from the irresponsible. Most guns used in crime were at one time purchased legally but irresponsible people buy guns to sell to criminals. Irresponsible people store guns where they are easily stolen. Irresponsible people carry conceled not realizing that the tells are there that you are carrying which ironically makes you a target to someone who wants your gun. So the real target we have are the irresponsible.
This is why I maintain that requiring the same rules to gun ownership as would apply to being able to drive a potentially lethal car. Training before you get a license. Periodic license renewal. Revocation of license for irresponsible behavior. Finally, liability insurance. If your guns are stolen you must report them as such. Repeatedly being stolen and you lose your license and each theft bumps up your rates.
3% of the population owns half the guns. That's an average of 15 each and they just might be less inclined to have so many if they had to insure all of them. Get them down to an average of five each and you just dropped the number of guns that could be stolen by 50 million.

During the study interval (12 months in Memphis, 18 months in Seattle, and Galveston) 626 shootings occurred in or around a residence. This total included 54 unintentional shootings, 118 attempted or completed suicides, and 438 assaults/homicides. Thirteen shootings were legally justifiable or an act of self-defense, including three that involved law enforcement officers acting in the line of duty.
Conclusion:
For every time a gun in the home was used in a self-defense or legally justifiable shooting, there were four unintentional shootings, seven criminal assaults or homicides, and 11 attempted or completed suicides.

The conclusion, while possibly true, is meaningless as it ignores the fact a gun need not be fired to be used in self defense; in addition, it ignores the defensive uses of a firearm outside the home -- and thus does not provide a true representation of the number of defensive uses.
These omissions are, almost certainly, intentional.

55 of the 107 were mentally ill. Most are mentally ill.

Take out the cases with 3 killings, and the proportion remains the same.
