As good as the P-47 was, it was overshadowed by the P-51 because of the latter's unique ability to protect bombers on long-range missions.

And the P-47 was designed by a Russian who came to the US in 1927 I believe.
But that aircraft was one tough puppy, and the Pratt & Whitney R2800 radial engine was superb.
It was a mystery why they kept with a radial engine on a fighter, as they are almost impossible to streamline.
