Well, it looks like that old adage "Win the battle, but lose the war," is true. Actually, the running street battles between the Alt-right Freikorps and antifascists are completely unnecessary since fascist leaders eventually self destruct because their lives are so disorganized. The leadership of the Nazi Storm-troopers were almost all homosexual like Ernest Rohm and Edmund Heine which caused conflict in the paramilitary organization. Eventually, Hitler had them shot because the professional German military would not support Hitler or have anything to do with these veteran military misfits thugs. Nothing has changed. It is the early supporters of fascism that really get screwed...so to speak.

Others physically attack it.

We should oppose those who physically attack meetings, rallies, or marches, regardless of what we think

It will be interesting to future historians to trace the decline of the Left from defenders of Free Speech [with the exception of the Communist Party, who were opposed to it] , to its enemies, and the transformation of the Right, from, generally, people who were not, to put it politely, comfortable with the idea of Free Speech, to its defenders. (I'm not sure how deep that conversion runs, by the way, but we have to take what we can get.)

I know that to some people on the Right today, the idea that the Right was once generally not really happy with Free Speech -- not to put it more strongly -- may sound tendentious. But I grew up in Texas in the 1950s, and I can assure you it's true. Because then, Free Speech was generally exercised by liberals and the Left, who were seen by Rightists as unpatriotic.
