Hitler was a nationalist, and desired power. Like all tyrants, he took the path that would best meet his objective. After acquiring power, he was a tyrant, and like all tyrants power was the objective and "left" and "right" were irrelevant to him.

The German Workers Party (DAP) was formed in Jan 1919, and was engaged in a political battle (and street war) with the socialists and communists. To appeal to a broader population, the DAP deliberately co-opted many socialist/communist policies and renamed itself the German National Socialist Workers' Party (Nazi).

The Nazi Party was socialism tailored to post WW1 Germany.

Almost everything written about the Nazi party until recently (i.e., if you exclude the recent politically based PR) clearly shows the roots of the Nazis were in the socialist movement of the late 19th century. The entire purpose of Hayek's book The Road to Serfdom is to point out the danger of socialism/communism and Nazism, and he has several chapters (with references) about the roots of Nazism.

Yes, he is. That’s why he proudly displayed that communist flag on his mayoral offices wall.
