That's factually inaccurate. Approximately 3.5 percent of white Americans have 1 percent or more of African ancestry. Most such mixing resulted in the child being classified (by American standards, the "one drop" rule) as black. As a consequence, African Americans have, on average, about 20% of white ancestry. Strom Thurmond's daughter considers herself black.
