"Almost 93,000 people were killed in Syria's conflict by the end of April this year, but the true number could be "potentially much higher", the United Nations human rights office says.

The exact figure released on Thursday - 92,901 people - is much higher than the UN's last death toll back in January of 59,000 people.

"The constant flow of killings continues at shockingly high levels," said Navi Pillay, the UN high commissioner for human rights. "This is most likely a minimum casualty figure. The true number of those killed is potentially much higher."

An average of more than 5,000 people have been killed every month since last July, while rural Damascus and Aleppo have recorded the highest tolls since November, the report said in its latest study compiling documented deaths.

Among the victims were at least 6,561 children, including 1,729 children younger than 10.

The UN has acknowleged it has "underreported the number of deaths".

    'Children tortured'

Rupert Colville spokesman for Pillay, told Al Jazeera that there were huge constraints on estimating the number of people who had died in the conflict.

"We're reliant, really, on some very brave activists who since the beginning of this conflict have done there best to keep track of how many people have been killed," Colville said.

The report said UN teams on the ground and activists had found evidence of children being tortured during the conflict.

"We've all seen videos and photos of children who have been tortured to death, children who have been summarily executed, " Colville said.

"We've seen entire families that have been slaughtered, including babies even, and then you've got children who have been killed by indiscriminate shellfire, missiles, aerial bombardment and a general, no-holds-barred conflict."

Meanwhile, Syrian rebels reportedly killed at least 60 people, including civilians government loyalists, in a battle in Halta, a Sunni-majority village in the country's east, activists said.

The fighting over the past few days targetted members of the Shia community, highlighting the increasingly sectarian nature of the country's civil war.

The opposition fighters reportedly stormed and burned civilian homes in the village in the eastern Deir Azzor province.

The attack is said to be in retaliation for an earlier assault by Shias from Hatla that killed four opposition fighters"

Not much to reply too, as I clearly agreed Christians were being killed....and simply pointed out they were no more targeted than Children. Care to wrap you panties around that?

What DOES it matter? The moron, sell-out democrat and republican congress have agreed to let Obama arm the Islamic terrorists that you are supporting.

I find it interesting (sic), that in your vast and superior imagination I am in any way supportive of Islamic terrorists, Syrian rebels, Assad, or anyone, anywhere in the entire backward and violence prone region. I believe I have made it clear in my postings on this topic (as well as virtually everything in the ME), that I believe we should simple stay out of it and let them kill each other, as they have for thousands of years and will continue to do so for the forseeable future.
That you seem incapable of understanding basic English without inserting your own invalid and tainted opinions is forgivable, based on capability. But, I prefer you contain this corruption of thought to your own comments, rather than projecting them onto mine.

There is another thing though, the Americans have been helping the Kurds and the jihadists were sent in by Turkey to fight the Kurds, so wouldn't it be a little illogical to be helping one group and then be sending in armed jihadists to fight that group? Maybe you better rethink your hypothesis?

Since this thread is about a Catholic priest being beheaded, today a Turkish paper wrote that the two Syrian bishops who were kidnapped by Chechnians rebels were killed. The murderers were captured in Turkey but then released and supposedly shipped to Russia. Russia though denies that they entered their territory.

Don't care what you prefer, and there is no use in getting into it. Earlier you seemed to be claiming that Christians were killing thousands of people like the rebels in Syria, so I took that as support of them. I'm glad you agree that they should be left to their own devices. Why should we help another country again bring down their despot? We already lost an Ambassador in doing it before. Where does this money come from? Think of the amount of aircraft they would need to create a no-fly zone. It's insane and makes no sense; that's why our government will do it. And they pay absolutely no attention to the will of the people here in the U.S.

HAHAHAHAHA! Already did, but let's make it even easier for you.

By the way, when I Googled Syrian bishops who were kidnapped, the story was on the first page. Not hard to find at all - can't imagine anyone thinking it was.

Having now re-read the article its says :

"Fadi Hurigil, the head of the Antakya Orthodox Church Foundation, also said they were sure that the bishops in the video were not Yaziji or Ibrahim.

So , what does that mean ? Was Bishop Boulos Yaziji and Bishop Yohanna Ibrahim , beheaded as Jeannettee claimed - or not ?

    :confusion:

Am I missing something about these bishops. The nephew says his uncle has not been killed and the head of the church says that the video shows two unknown people. So the only conclusion I can see is that the two bishops have not been killed and perhaps the video is fake as no other bishops have been reported as missing. Caveat - I've not looked into any sources at all except what has been posted in this thread.

just beat me to it :)

You expect something different from the Satanic Murder Cult of Islam? This is typical behavior, those cheering are the good Muslims you hear so much about, the ones doing the "dirty work" are the radicals. Not alot of difference is there?

That's a great way to go for a believer. His soul is waiting with all of the other martyrs under the altar in heaven. They'll get out when more are killed to reach the magic number. Revelation 6:9-11http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=revelation 6:9-11&version=KJV;ERV;NKJV;MSG

Many of us in USA are not thrilled with that idea, mind you. I cannot imagine why Kerry and Obama have decided to arm Syrians. We don't even give free guns to USA citizens and don't allow them to carry weapons in public without a background check and a special carry permit; and here we are giving even more dangerous fully automatic machine guns to people who are not USA citizens, never got a background check, and have no USA permit for the weapons. And on top of that, they are using my USA tax dollars to pay for this free gift to a group of people who are not even a government or group recognized by the UN. IMHO this giving of machine guns to foreigners is a crime against humanity and Obama and Kerry should have to answer to this in The Hague.
