Having money is not the same as making money. A loser can win the lottery or get a big inheritance- but does nothing but spend it until it's used up. A winner takes it as a hand-up and builds with it. Trump's inheritance helped him start big and earlier, but he has grown that money 100 fold.

The arguments here on the forum pretend to be about "facts". Selected facts, designed to support a conclusion that other facts contradict. In truth it is how we think and how we act that makes us effective and valuable. Some simply can't think in certain ways, and invariably attack those who can do what they cannot. The limitation is not one of actual capacity- it's one that results from accepting certain concepts or ideology as real. Kind of like having a yardstick that says 36 on one side but is actually 42" long, and on the other- says it is 48" long. Both sides are wrong. Either side can be applied- to distort the truth in one way or another. Unfortunately, neither of them give you an honest understanding of facts.

All the distortion does nothing but distract from what is real and what is possible.

I have great respect for men like Carneige who can here with nothing and became one of the richest men of hus era. Of course he was an immigrant but having cone from a country wher English was the language he did have a little advantage but I would not major major.

I womder how my students who live in the worst poverty in the projects in Brooklyn would feel if we talked about them living in **** holes. It would hurt the same way it hurts people who live in Africa and Haiti who hear them selves being defined as people who live in **** holes. What is worse it’s coming from the president of the United States.
I think what is so disturbing is that people don’t realize that being politically correct is not a bad thing. It used to be called being sensitive. We don’t describe someone is that fat guy will describe him as the big guy. As a teacher I would not tell a parent his child is stupid, I would say he has learning disabilities. Hurtful things are just that hurtful!

 

And, that is rational. However- would you like to be able to give your children a hand up by leaning them money? Somewhere alone the family line, a parent does that. If those he helps follow suit and leave more to the next generation, and they do that again- they build a lot of wealth. More time is spent making the wealth work and less trying to get off the ground level trying to build wealth. My parents didn't leave me much, and most of that I made for them by investing a small CD in the market. however I will leave more than a million to my children, plus property of several kinds and no debt of any kind. Life is a limited thing; giving a headstart to them allows a great deal more to be accomplished. It's not a wrongful thing to do, neither for the children of the nations economy.

That is happening all the time. Many of those who are living in those conditions are doing so because they don't know better- they accept it as normal, not sub-standard and something that they should address.

Sometimes, a direct identification of a condition makes things clear, where anything else obfuscates the situation and actually enables it.

There is of course the fact that most of the time, courtesy and awareness of feelings is totally appropriate. As a teacher- you should also know that there are times when the one you are talking to just doesn't understand the subtle message you are trying to send, and you are going to have to be blunt.

 

Of those of us who can do hive our kids a little help ad we did by giving our daughther just about all of the downpayment for her first real estate property. The point is that Trumpeizdas love to claim oh so falsely that Trump is a " self made man". No he is not ... No one who gets 40 million from dada is a self made man.

 

Maybe, maybe not, but given how often he lies about his previous statements, my money is on him having said it. If that turns out being the case, the serial lying and the complicity of the others in the room actually disturbs me more than the statement itself . . . and it isn't as if either of those things is new.

I know how to talk to students to motivate them to do their best. I have written a book that is in a third edition and has been translated into two other languages so I think I know how to handle kids ... you make it sound like it’s either tell them that they’re stupid (trump style) or tell them everything is fine. It’s not that simple. One of the things kids lack is self confidence, And it is important to develop that. I am a person who believes that teaching is a talent and some teachers are awesome and some do not belong in the classroom. They may be super intelligent but they don’t have that connection. But sometimes being blunt is fine but there is a degree. It is important to be tactful. I would never describe with my students live in **** holes. I hope you are not defending a president who is doing that

 

Flake gave the most incredible speech today on just what Trump is doing by calling freedom of the press fake news. He has shown the countries that have dictators as the ones that are using that term now. Good job Trump. Stalin used to call the press the enemy of the people just like trump

 

I think $14M is the number, it came in a loan from dad- and that is also confirmed by a Hillary Clinton claim as well as others. If it were $40 M, it's still not the reason he is financially successful. Lottery winners have blown through 100 million and gone bankrupt.

The concept of "self-made" being nullified by a strong financial start isn't true either. many who somehow come into money lose it in short order- it takes something different to build on it. I started in business with my last weeks paycheck, talked a landlord into renting me a building and letting me pay after I sold something, then talked wholesalers into giving me small credit lines. That was 1968. Now I'm what might be called well off- my taxes are more than most people's incomes, sometimes 6 figures, and I have no debt. IF I had been gifted with say a million- I would now be worth many 10's of millions. Having money does not make you a wealth-builder at all; it just lets you start building farther up the ladder. IF he wasn't able to be that kind of person, if he didn't have what it takes- he would have lost the advantage of a jump-start that dad provided.

I don't mind people criticizing Trump, he certainly has character aspects that invite it. However, if one can't give credit where credit is due for fear of weakening his point, the argument isn't a valid one. Here's two, just from today's news:

Today- the DOW broke 26,000. It broke 25,000 January 4th, and that was the fastest 1,000 point gain in history. I think the jump to 26 was faster. I don't know how many new record DOW highs have occurred in the last year- I know it's at least 70. What small investors like me are calling the "Trump market" (because it started the day he won the election and hasn't backed off) is one of those credits. 52% of Americans have investments, and all of them are gaining strongly. Why is it growing so fast? Because that's what happens when the right decisions are being made. Action in leadership- not endless smoke and babble promises. Despite all the efforts to derail his plans, the man is delivering things that matter to most all Americans.

Given that- I will take the crude side and results anytime over a charmer who gets nothing done, Obama style.

Today, the news also has a story about one of the results of the tax changes Trump has managed to get passed. Apple has announced it will pay $38 B in tax to repatriate money held overseas (just as Trump said they would) and, it will be building an additional new campus, and adding 20,000 employees. This is considered to be a $350 billion boost to the economy over 5 years.

 

I heard 40 M but a loan I don't think so. His dad also helped him get loans from banks which is fine you or I would do that. Still Trump is not a self made man. Yes he did make money that's good for him but he did not start at ground zero because he did not have to. I just gave him credit for making money ok. I am not going to lie and claim that he is a self made man when he is not.
