Education is a major driving force in the economic future of ANY country.

And, that is especially true today, as in every field knowledge is increasing in importance.

That means that education IS a national issue. And allowing the failure of education is to be associated with decline in the nation's competitiveness and reduction in standard of living.

Also, by ensuring the wealth can get education while the middle class has a far harder time with that, our country is ensuring a divide between the haves and have nots that is growing in strength. That has implications in ALL sectors of our economy, in our claim of the existence of an "American Dream", in our claims that America provides income mobility, etc.

Allowing failure in education is a KEY way of ensuring America loses out in the emerging economic sectors that define future opportunity.

The issue here is the degree to which we allow that possibility.

By denying significant segments the opportunity of education, competing in the economy because disproportionately hard for them.

In fact, we can make it hard enough that large numbers CAN'T excel!

Those behind the Welfare State want the middle classes dismantled, because they're too independent and thus too difficult to control. They want the middle class joining the underclass in dependence.

Exactly, and since parents should know all that, it's on them to ensure they aren't contributing to that failure by not taking education seriously. There are plenty of American parents doing the right thing and producing future-ready kids, so there's nothing stopping those who want it.

This is a failure of PARENTING, not the System.

No one is denied. Public education is available to all. In fact, even advanced education is available to all - via academically selective public schools. Entry entirely via merit .. and thus does not exclude even the most disadvantaged.

The failure to take advantage of the excellent education freely available to all Americans, is a personal choice. Even the worst schools produce a handful of excellent students, so there are no excuses.

This is not a failure of parenting.

The problem in America is that the cost of education is outside the reach of the middle class.

And, the issue for America is that we can not afford anything less than a fully competitive USA.

It's no different than the USA deciding to give up on national defense.

We lose when our economy loses. Our economy loses when we are no longer competitive in the arenas of significance - all of which require education.

I don't even know what the heck you are talking about.

Are you denying that we have people who need help?

Thomas Sowell, by far not the only example of your comments, proves that skin color is not the excuse that merits being given for a reason to fail. Many people who are not white turn out to excel all the time.

My daughter is middle class and she got her Nursing Degree. She is working as a Registered Nurse and is adding more to her education all the time.

My grandson is also middle class and holds a high paying job at Facebook.
The worse of the non educated do have parents who have no respect for being educated. Naturally most kids follow the path of the parents in many ways.

Highschool is available to all. Unfortunately, the quality is not as good as in other countries.

But the important part is that the significant future economic sectors can not be addressed with a high school education.

And, the degree we allow the US to fail at those future economic sector defines how competitive we will be, including in issues such as national defense, where the major portion of our defense power is in the form of economic power.

This is FAR more than a racial discrimination issue. And, you will notice that I've NEVER ONCE suggested that.

This affects America's middle class across the board.

It's true that the lower you go in terms of family income, the worse the problem becomes.

Don't try to pretend this is just a race issue - even though we absolutely DO have a problem of discrimination that makes it harder for minorities to achieve large incomes.

    Great!!

And, yes I agree that parents DO have an influence on their children. But, I'm not arguing about that.

I'm saying that this issue is hugely important to AMERICA, and failure to address it IS having an affect on who can become educated. And, we still have a large population that is cut out of higher education BECAUSE of dollars - as well as the general failure to make the importance of education known throughout this nation.

    You said Bull.

Apparently you do not know what you are talking about as opposed to me.

We have people who drink too much. So now do you expect me to handle their problem for them?

I am not trying to mistate your position. You are the so called expert on YOUR mindset. Isn't communism the only governance that does not have property?

You have spouted so many outrageous claims, but to see you list Australia as number 1 seems contradictory to your position.

I am old enough to have heard this same argument going back to the 1940 era. Democrats talk a good talk but have no solutions.
When Bush came out with no child left behind the Democrats were his enemy for trying to help children do better.

Both of my daughters that grew up middle class hold university degrees. I lack one but I have hundreds of hours credit in colleges.
The apples fell close to my tree. Both my past wives were not high priority on education at the upper levels.

There have been multiple serious proposals concerning defraying the cost to the student.

There are significant paybacks to American for increasing the numbers and broadening the demographic of those who can get a higher education.

Education increases income tax, creates more successful corporations (the majority of which are created by graduates), reduces the load on our social safety net, improves the decision power applied to our policy decisions, etc.

The fact that you have two kids who got college degrees is not an indication of whether America is being successful in education.

    This can't go on indefinitely.

If we don't distribute income more reasonably than we are today, we're going to see those losing out using their franchise to force change.
A paean to greed. Love it.

Of course not. As I have told you often -- and you always ignore and falsely claim I said the opposite -- property in the fruits of one's labor is one of the bedrock rights that every individual human being has; and when it is not secure, prosperity is impossible.

If you are not trying to misstate it, how did your characterization of it come to bear no resemblance to anything I have said?
I've had a lot of practice refuting people who have attacked it, if that's what you mean.
    Correct.
No, that is false. I have only identified indisputable facts of objective physical reality and their inescapable logical implications.
I stated that the countries were listed in alphabetical order, not order of desirability. As I said before, I doubt that you can accurately describe my position. You have given ample proof of that in the last couple of days.

After they have paid a landowner full market value for permission to access it.
Which you have to pay a landowner full market value for his permission to attend.
No, that is false. They exclude everyone who can't afford to pay a landowner full market value for his permission to attend them.
It's not freely available, don't be ridiculous. Americans have to pay landowners full market value for permission to attend a public school.
As long as you can afford to pay a landowner full market value for his permission to get a "free" public education.
