Most of our local school boards here in Pa. pay teachers more for advanced degrees,I assume it's written into the contracts the union signs with the local school board.

I think the real issue is the teaching staff and what they are accomplishing. Capitalsim/competition are the central issues of acquiring the talent you believe you need.

If PA is getting great teachers who are turning out quality graduates at a low failure rate in all its districts, then be happy!

The wealthier suburban communities definitely are because the high real estate values and taxes generate lots of tax dollars to pay high quality teachers but this is not the same for cities where real estate values are much lower generating far less tax dollars, location is everything when it comes to education.

As far as the teacher education topic goes, I have a relative who is a teacher, here in New York, and she needed to take college courses to become a teacher. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a masters degree, but it wasn't just a high school education either to qualify.

    Amen.

This is one of the ways we promote generational poverty. We simply make good education something that many can buy one way or another, while leaving those in poverty to face a serious headwind.

Then, at a time when education is a growingly serious employment requirement, we complain that the poor aren't being successful!

My daughter taught math in the Bronx. She had a BS and an MS, neither in education. She was able to teach while making progress toward an MS in education at one of the NYC universities. She got tuition credits by agreeing to teach where her university placed her - thus, the Bronx.

About 40 years ago a friend did the same thing in OR. He could teach for a specified number of years while making progress toward his MS.

In both cases, proven progress toward an MS was required - and added a heck of a lot of work to both teach a full schedule and attend classes at night.

Here in Seattle the NOT for profit independent middle and high schools charge $20k and up (for high quality HS).

There are a few who charge less, because they are directly attached to a church that funds the school directly and/or through shared property and other resources.

Public HS costs tax payers more like $16k/year.

Also, charters here have been in areas where poverty is significant - areas where more support for students is required, making education more expensive.

These schools have been closing throughout the state, because of the incredibly difficult funding issues.

With the present very low birth rates across the entire USA I would assume that we are about to wind up with excess capacity in our schools and a decline in the demand for teachers??

Teachers are smart college graduates with skills that are applicable to numerous fields.

The question will continue to be whether the noncompetitive compensation and a career of having insignificant opportunity for advancement or creativity within their profession is going to attract quality teachers who have many other opportunities.

I know there is NO CHANCE that such an offer would appeal to me.

Actually, I think there are people who think there are teachers, and thus one can offer them anything as teaching is all could ever do. But, I know that is just plain wrong. Every business needs skills that teachers have. Plus, teachers know how to learn - they are EXPERTS at that!

Teachers, like every occupation have a lot of very good ones and a lot of very bad and a lot that fill in the broad middle ground.
