I was in the hospital for about 10 days last year. It wasn't COVID related. All the nurses had to reuse their paper masks for three working days (meaning, they would reuse a mask that had not been used during off days as long as the "work days" added up to 3). I didn't see anyone involved in my care using a N95 mask.

We can't force change in China without the cooperation of the entire free world. 21st century global markets have put customers and producers of (almost) everything (almost) everywhere. As long as either can be found outside this country, China is not pressured into any action.

 

You were not in the COVID unit, where they had to wear N95s till they finished the negative pressure area and started wearing the the full hood.

At the time my wife and daughter were both active nurses, one in a PCU dealing directly with COVID patients and those waiting rule out and and the other working in the ER. Normal protocol is to change mask between every patient to avoid carrying germs from on to the other.

But they could not do that due to a shortage of the N95 mask.

Funny. I never felt comfortable with our government buying masks from China (it seemed bizarre since we didn't know if this was a deliberate act to release the virus and allow open traveling to spread it).

I was in a COVID unit which is why I noticed it. There was some widget in the window which they said was for negative pressure. I also found it bizarre that I was the only patient on the whole floor. I've been in the hospital numerous times and I have NEVER seen that before.

 

Honestly?......The US Chamber of commerce wanted all this....They lobbied Republicans and Blue dog Democrats.....We lost the electronics industry, to Japan in the 70s, then car manufacturing to Japan, then South Korea, We have lost the solar industry now.....Soon as Japan workers were making a good living corporations moved to China.........This has happened in front of everyones faces!.........Unions screamed and no one cared...........Now people are concerned?

Also, it takes more than something in the window to make a negative pressure area. There has to be the whole two door system where only one can be open at a time and it has to have a dedicated air filtration system. It took them more than 6 weeks to retrofit the unit at my wife's VA hospital.

 

Exactly!!! That was my question too.

The only answer I got to my question was that the room was set up for COVID patients. The attending told me that they discussed Life Flighting me to a bigger hospital but decided to keep me here because I wasn't strong enough for the transfer. I know they discussed that at least two times because a consulting doctor told me the same thing a few days later.

Now, I'm wondering if they assigned me that room because I have asthma (maybe making me more vulnerable to COVID if I was exposed?). I honestly don't know. I was there 10 days and was never tested and never presented with COVID symptoms.

Ironically, I did test positive months later in November and still have no idea how I contracted it.
