They have to recruit from the human race, and human error is common. Alas.

They recruit from people who managed high school, that is on the really low end of what the human race is capable of doing.

^ This sums it up pretty well. It's a tragic situation all around. It doesn't mean all cops are bad. And it doesn't mean this one didn't act negligently. I actually think most cops are really good people who just want to do the right thing.

Many are college educated, but human error is also common among the college educated.
    Human history proves it.

BS. One has an expectation of safety from warrentless government intrusion in one's home.

The concept of military-like Special Weapons and Tactics for routine police calls needs to end. Also, the concept of a "war on drugs" needs to end. Domestic law enforcement should not be seen as a military activity or a war. People would have far more respect for police if their primary focus was not revenue generation or enforcement of victimless crimes. As a final point one can support the police without supporting police abuse. If we need to pay more for professional policy that is money well spent.

By what authority or law does the state have a right to dictate my physical actions within my own home?

I think first people should push for better trained and better qualified police. Also, laws need to be passed to better limit qualified immunity and put police on notice that they cannot kill people simply because they are nervous.

What a really poor written MSN article, not even high school level journalism.

What happened with the five W's that are suppose to be in the first paragraph ? It wasn't until the 5th paragraph that we learn this happened in Wichita Kansas.

That what the internet did to journalism.

    But I digress.

    Wichita P.D.
I wonder if WPD officers were trained by qualified NRA instructors ?

Yeah - the whole SWAT thing is not generally good; this I agree with.

If you create a quasi-military force to deal with citizen/"civilian" issues, there are going to be problems.

It's locally based, so an end run around Posse Comitatus restrictions, but clearly a questionable thing.

    But MS-13 and all that?

I can see where SWAT can be justified in exceptional circumstances.

True or not.... the bar is just exceptionally low for people to qualify for the job. It's unskilled labor with basically in company training. That's a recipe of people doing their best but still messing up. It's also a recipe for people who aim low,... because lets be honest, the pay is crap.

It's a very hard job - high stress - but if you stay in it for the long haul, the benefits (including pension) are excellent.

None the less.... it doesn't change a thing with what I wrote, about the exceptionally low bar being lowered for people who want to be a cop.

It depends where you want to serve; the bar can be very high.

I doubt that many choose law enforcement for the pay - there are many better paying alternatives.

There are? But people do it for a number of reasons; it's often a family thing, as with firefighting.

In the case of the subject. I doubt the people who showed up to kill this unarmed had such a bar.

How much can Uber drivers make? Truck drivers? Window washers? There are many other things to do. Law enforcement seems to be a special calling.
