And require people with training in PLC's, some electrical and some hydraulics. We have dedicated programs in our community college systems now for such training. The jobs can pay between $80,000 and $100,000 and up and THEY ARE BEGGING FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN DO THESE JOBS. and build them and build the parts that go into them and design them and ship them and on and on and on. Yes efficiency is a wonderful thing, increase in productivity is a wonderful thing it grows the economy and creates more and BETTER jobs such as working of a robot to drill that hole rather than standing there all day drilling that hole. We had 52 months of full employment in the 2000's when we were reaching new heights in productivity in part because of automation. So no it does not eliminate all the jobs, it means better less labor intensive jobs.
there's a reason I don't ask burgerflippers their opinion on the economy. Wanting 15/hour for teenager work is a reason
This is why I'm pro raising min wage- its not that I think that people who make min wage shouldn't be trying to improve themselves, rather it seems the most realistic way for them to get off of the Government dole.
I remember when the UAW went on strike just one too many times and many of the workers were replaced by automation. Government can raise the minimum wage to $50/hour. That doesn't mean business owners will keep hiring slackers who spend their wages on weed and sleeve tattoos. At some point it's cheaper to automate or otherwise reconfigure their business plan.
How is the graph I showed in conflict with capitalism? Those lines touching just show that as minimum wage has slightly risen since the 40's that the value of the dollar has also gone down to negate any rise. Its actually as bad as it has ever been, even in better times economically people were making less but had more buying power in relation because a dollar could buy more. Dont see why everyone is stuck on the dollar number 15, its just a number and should be taken only as its worth. I call it 4.5 gallons of gasoline. Still not sure the whole wait till your burger costs 8 dollars, could have sworn that what I pay for a value meal right now I would say, if we tried to fix value of the dollar you would not have to raise the minimum wage eh? Maybe it could be lowered in that case but its not looking like thats going to happen.
Not the graph. Your comment "Not good that those lines are starting to touch." Do you think having an authoritarian government mandate wage levels is the best long-term solution?
LOL the lines touching are a reflection of the value of the dollar, thats why they are farther apart at the bottom, if you made 5 dollars an hour and it had more purchasing power then its better for everyone and some of it ends up back in the economy as expendable income. When they start to touch for the first time its not a good thing and an indication of the value of our money. Making a dollar an hour is not bad if that dollar can buy you 10 candy bars, not the 1 you get now. A good capitalism wants people with expendable incomes, not people just getting buy, they dont buy crap. ..... oh and to answer your question.... yes I do think government should mandate wages to a degree to ensure social health. Do you think have another robber baron age would be more benefit to us as a nation? Dont look at a list of nations with no minimum wage, its not pretty and the only business that goes there is to exploit the workforce.
Thanks, but can read a graph. What does this have to do with government mandating minimum wages in conflict with capitalist economic principles?
I agree with your points here, but I have to say, that the thought of "Work" being agsinst human nature is the same for all humans, IMO. From executives to poor people, in a capitalistic environment, we are all trying to get the most we can out of something while providing the least we have to. That does not make it a good or bad thing, IMO. It's just the way life is. It's only a matter of how much freedom do we give people to try and change their circumstances.
I honestly don't understand the 'minimum wage' mentality. It doesn't make sense. Minimum wage isn't about a living wage and never has been. The last time I had a minimum wage was in the early 70's. Since then I don't even know what the MW is. If I thought a job was worth $4 an hour I'd take it. Can anyone tell me which employer wants to hire someone who refuses to work at any wage? Seriously. Every time I order at a drive through there's an ad saying that a manager's position is open and they'll train you. Its over twice the minimum wage and with benefits. Really good benefits. The minimum wage is a way to root out those who don't want to work. That's one of the purposes of a minimum wage. Can anyone honestly disagree with this?
And I, a so-called Conservative, agree with you 100%. I can't stand to work. I'm an artist. I demand a high price for my work and just because I demand it doesn't mean I'm going to get it and most of the time I don't. Except for the left winged nutz. They want to live in luxury without working for it. Correct. Every person in the USA has the opportunity to change their circumstances. The left doesn't want that to get out. If it does they no longer have a job. Liberty should trump everything except the Constitution of the USA.
Why is everyone here under the assumption that wage is based on merit? And people say I'm delusional.
Maybe it's the Soviet flag. Wages should be based on merit, but that doesn't always happen. What many people, myself included, are against is the idea of government setting wage levels.
One of the problems with minimum wage is that it eliminates job competition. Someone that really wants and needs to work and may be less 'valuable' than the next cannot compete for that position so will be out of work. MW actually hurts the most needy.
But I am sure they can identify with the working people so one should be elected President. - - - Updated - - - How about cutting back on the government dole?
Expendable earned incomes not mandated incomes. Why don't employers just page everyone minimum wage then?

I've met people who shared your view but they were the minority. I took over supervision of a unit that did diverse "work" and I met with each employee asking which part of the job they enjoyed the most. One looked confused and said, "Nothing. None of it. I hate working. Everyone does." I talked with some of his friends and they laughed and said, "That's Bill." I enjoyed working. I didn't enjoy the politics and the people but I enjoyed the work I did.
The left begins with the premise that everyone deserves a middle clas standard of living regardless of whether the work, regardless of whether they are a good employee, regardless of their own life's choices. Therefore any job must provide this regardless of the return on wage to the employer, if the wage being paid actually loses money for the employer oh well.
Fast food employees are so young I'm surprised it's legal for them to work. They must be at most 14. Completely incompetent - but then again, they are really young. Those aged 18-25 I find to be completely brain dead. As far as I'm concerned $7.25 is about $5 too much.
You can enjoy work, and still strive to get the most out of it that you can while providing the least. I am pretty sure most executives love going to work, but that doesn't change their mindset of increasing profits as much as they can. And I haven't met very many large companies that can do this without harming their employees in the process. In fact, my current job is the first major company I've ever seen that treats their employees like gold.
I didn't phrase that correctly. MW earners who want to become better employees are going to work harder in order to get a raise. MW earners who don't want to work can be given the "garbage" jobs until they quit or move on.
