France has announced it will vote in favor of recognition of Palestine as a non-member observer state at the UN General Assembly later this week.

(*)The French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told parliament that France "will respond 'yes'” when the issue is put on a vote at the UN General Assembly.

France, a permanent UN Security Council member, is the first European country to speak in favor of elevating Palestinian status from an observer to a nonmember observer state

The Palestinians expect the assembly to vote on Thursday. Earlier the Palestinian Authority said it expected the assembly to vote two-thirds in favor of granting the PA non-member status.

On Thursday, the Palestinians will officially ask the assembly to upgrade their status. Earlier the Palestinian Authority said it expected the assembly to vote two-thirds in favor of granting the PA non-member status, seeing the move as an important step toward a two-state solution with Israel.

Israel strongly opposes the bid. Previously Tel Aviv said it objects to any wording the PA would bring for a vote at the assembly.

But as Israeli authorities were unable to block the bid they have changed their stance and now are trying to soften the wording, Haaretz reported on Tuesday citing a senior Israeli official.

The article states Tel Aviv and Washington are working together to change the document.

Last year, Washington used its veto power to block a Palestinian bid for statehood at the UN Security Council. A similar move is unlikely in this case as there are no vetoes in the General Assembly.

Does this mean all of France are now anti semite Jew hating Nazi's?

Or might it merely mean, albeit too little, that everyone is waking up to Zion Nazi lies, and the top people know this, and are really covering their own backsides, as they are intelligent enough to realise that all scams come to and end, eventually?

You'll usually find not that many people are against a Palestinian state. A lot of people are against Hamas and Fatah which obviously affects their judgement.

It means they want to do right but most likley it will end bad for both Israel and the Palestinians,

it also means that all these nations that will vote for the Palestinian bid, althou you think they favour the Palestinians and "against" Israel - in rteality are in favour of 2 states solution that you object, they vote FOR Israel and Palestine not just Palestine,

its estimated that 135 of 195 states will vote in favour of not more,

Israel said it will not punish the Palestinians for breaking the Oslo agreements here again, but will collect its owed debt for power service of 800 Mil Ils from the taxes they collect for the Palestinians.

If Israel is in the right, they have nothing to worry about from this.
If their wrong, they'll probably try to topple the Palestinian authority or something.

Israel AND the Palestinians are both wrong, its concerning to see which way the Palestinians will take it but there is no fear,

Israel made a deal with the Palestiian authority in Oslo that it will collect the taxes for the Palestinians and give them power in exchange for coorperation from their part and now the Palestinians broke that, why should Israel continue with these services? they went alone with the declaration then why not run their country alone? either we work together or we work alone right?

    No I don't think that.

And I would not object to two states either, depends what the T&C would be.

When a place become a State, war can legally be declared upon it and bombs legally dropped. Blockades become legal....It would be a good idea to declare Palestine a State.

Giving them power means that they should be collecting their own taxes including those taxes from the illegal settllers.

I am stupid so i don't get it: how essential is this "promotion" ? supporting Palestinians to get from non-state observer to observer status sounds to me more like good PR for nothing.

It means they can join several UN organizations and sue Israel for offenses in the international court - also means Israel will sue them thou,

It may also mean that once it has this status the Palestinians are more secure about the terretory they should get so they may not demand Israel to withdraw BEFORE negotiations, at least thats what the PLO hinted Israel, might be a smokescreen.

Gilos what exactly is your problem with palestinians getting statehood at the UN?

What harm does it do you? Surely the palestinians have cooperated, but they dont have to agree to every israeli demand do they?

None........mostly, if fact Im excited for the Paelstinians,

I am concerned a bit that Mashaal supports it and even spoke about peace in that relation two days after the cease fire, knowing what that man stands for, knowing his lies and propaganda skills - that made me think it might be a hoax, just a way to bash Israel.

But, since I have no way to know and no way to oppose it, ill be optimistic and hope for the best, I wish the best for the Palestinians, may this day be the historic begining of Palestine and true peace with Israel. To Life :)

It's an ego thing. Any status or official recognition awarded to Palestine is a serious loss of face for Israel, and diminishes their claim to any moral high-ground.

Well said, its really a simple matter.

In the same way that Israel uses its own national sovereignty and membership of the UN to both justify its existence, its internal policies and its actions as self defence...effectively so that no one can easily push it around and tell it what to do........so it will go for the palestinians.

Indeed Mashaal supports it, and indeed in some ways it may be used to bash Israel, but importantly when the conflict becomes one between two UN member states it becomes more important to those members and cannot be continually kicked into the long grass.
