With the massacre and mass-executions of Kindergartners and thier teachers ... enough is enough ...

Gabby Giffords launches group to counter gun lobby

    http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/201...ords-launches-group-to-counter-gun-lobby?lite

A national initiative aimed at curbing gun violence was launched by former US. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, on Tuesday -- the second anniversary of the shooting that killed six people and left her critically injured.

A new campaign website, Americans For Responsible Solutions, promised to “launch a national dialogue and raise funds to counter influence of the gun lobby.”

The couple last week visited Newtown, Conn., where a gunman opened fire in an elementary school, killing 20 children and six adults in December.
They also met with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a gun control advocate.

“In response to a horrific series of shootings that has sown terror in our communities, victimized tens of thousands of Americans, and left one of its own bleeding and near death in a Tucson parking lot, Congress has done something quite extraordinary - nothing at all,”

~ the pair wrote in an editorial published Tuesday on their site and in USA Today.

Achieving reforms to reduce gun violence and prevent mass shootings will mean matching gun lobbyists in their reach and resources," they wrote in the column.

"This country is known for using its determination and ingenuity to solve problems, big and small. Wise policy has conquered disease, protected us from dangerous products and substances, and made transportation safer.
But when it comes to protecting our communities from gun violence, we're not even trying -- and for the worst of reasons."

In an interview with ABC News, the couple said the visit to Newtown brought back a lot of memories of their own ordeal two years ago.

“And you hope that this kind of thing doesn’t happen again.
    But you know what?
It does happen again,” Kelly said.

The couple said they are both gun owners and strongly support the Second Amendment, but they acknowledge the need to prevent guns from ending up in the “wrong hands.”

Kelly and Giffords hope to work with politicians to take gun lobbyists head-on and engage the country in a discussion about preventing gun violence.

They also hope to establish a requirement for a comprehensive background check for the private sale of guns, and address the issue of the treatment of mentally ill people in the United States.
Another issue they hope to tackle is that of high-capacity magazines.

"An extended magazine is used to kill people," Kelly, a veteran of Desert Stom, told ABC, "lots of people."

Conn. politician apologizes after saying Giffords should 'stay out of my towns'

    http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/201...ing-giffords-should-stay-out-of-my-towns?lite

A Connecticut state representative is apologizing for a Facebook post warning Gabby Giffords to stay away, ahead of the former Arizona congresswoman's visit with Sandy Hook Elementary victims' families last week in Newtown.

"Gabby Giffords stay out of my towns," the post on the Facebook page for State Rep. DebraLee Hovey, a Republican who represents Newtown and Monroe, said last week.

NBC Connecticut tried to reach Hovey about the comment, but she was unavailable.
In the days after, there were several blogs and opinion pieces criticizing Hovey.

On Monday, she issued an apology for the comments she posted online.

"The remarks I made regarding Congresswoman Giffords' visit were insensitive and if I offended anyone I truly apologize," Rep. Hovey said in a statement.

"My comments were meant to be protective of the privacy of the families and our community as we work to move on, and were in no way intended as an insult to Congresswoman Giffords personally.
Our community has struggled greatly through this tragedy, and we are all very sensitive to the potential for this event to be exploited for political purposes.
This is what I wish to avoid," she added

Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords met with Newtown officials Friday afternoon before heading to visit with families of the victims of last month’s Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

I knew it was just a matter of time before leftists passed the emotional extortion torch from the Brady Bunch to a more recent, politically connected victim.

I'm glad to see Giffords and Kelly are taking on the arrogant, extremist gun lobby.

As gun-owning supporters of the Second Amendment, they can provide an opposing, sane voice given salience by personal experience.

If I were the gun lobby I would be seriously worried attitudes are changing in America - the average guy is asking if the current insanity is worth it just to appease a few

How about this. We give you your assault weapon ban for five years. If gun violence does not decrease then we get a constitutional amendment ensuring the rights to assault weapons, fully automatic, that can never be overturned.

    Fair enough?

With the very difficult Constitutional Amendment process, and the Supreme Court precedents in Miller, McDonald, and Heller (that effectively say that firearms "in common use for lawful purposes" cannot be banned), there is very little that can legally be done. 30-round magazines are commonly used for lawful purposes. As are AR-15's and AR-15 clones.

And I would either point out if this is the first time you're seeing this info, or remind you if it's not, that ALL rifles were responsible for just 358 murders in 2011. AR-15's and other so-called "assault weapons" are an unknown subset of that 358.

Were I an anti-gun nut leftie, I'd scrub any evidence of it from my public persona....like "Obama 2012" bumper stickers....

300 million guns.... the natural rights and liberties of tens of millions (a few?) of *currently* law-abiding gun owners openly threatened....

With the incredibly contentious and polarized political atmosphere, I'm afraid things may get quite dicey this time around. ;)

They will just say, it didn't work because of hand guns; they will then go after handguns; They want us to be like Britain where violence is increasing because the ordinary citizen is unable to protect themselves.

    Okay, "enough is enough".
    Now what?
Do you think Giffords getting involved in this is going to lead to guns being banned?
Her and her husband both admit to being gun owners, and they are supporters of the 2nd Amendment.
Maybe their involvement will help lead to some new laws, but guns are not going to be banned which is what the OP and some other members here want.

I am 100% confident that banning assault weapons with large clips will not reduce violence because I know those types of weapons are used in less than 1% of violent acts.

The left would never take this deal because they know its true also.

If democrats really wanted to ban something that was the major cause of shootings it would be the Smith & Wesson .38 revolver. However, that is not an evil looking weapon therefore they would have a hard time convincing people to go along with their gun-grabbing.

I have lot's of guns but none of them would be affected by any proposed changes.

Having said that....you'r very right. The NRA has held sway for a long time because nobody had a cause to grab ahold of. This child killing is about as extreme as it would take for anti gun folks to have "ammo" in their struggle, if you can forgive the analogy

The globalist oligarchy(progressives and their crony capitalists/bankers) want the Americans disarmed. We are in the way of their ultimate plans.

Nutters kowtow to Squinty LaP's every whim and goose step to his extremist tune. The Second Amendment is not the NRA's property, despite all the money they have accrued by pretending that it is. It's time that Americans reclaimed the title to their Right and how it should be regulated. A grass roots movement to take back the issue from the highly-funded, political influence buyers is overdue.

My personal suggestion: Licenses based upon demonstrated competence and mental stability. Universal registration to trace and recover those stolen and/or used in a crime. Same as automobiles. Let the fetishists fondle all they can afford, but be held responsible for their use. (They won't like that.)

Gen. McChrystal ~ Assault rifles are for battlefields, not schools

    http://tv.msnbc.com/2013/01/08/form...ault-rifles-are-for-battlefields-not-schools/

Former Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who led the war in Afghanistan, endorsed strong gun control laws Tuesday on Morning Joe.

“I spent a career carrying typically either an M16 or an M4 Carbine.
An M4 Carbine fires a .223 caliber round which is 5.56 mm at about 3000 feet per second.
When it hits a human body, the effects are devastating.
It’s designed for that,” McChrystal explained.

“That’s what our soldiers ought to carry.
I personally don’t think there’s any need for that kind of weaponry on the streets and particularly around the schools in America.”

We’ve got to take a serious look—I understand everyone’s desire to have whatever they want—but we’ve got to protect our children, we’ve got to protect our police, we’ve got to protect our population,” McChrystal said.
    “Serious action is necessary.
Sometimes we talk about very limited actions on the edges and I just don’t think that’s enough.”

Put armed guards or National Guardsmen in all public school campuses

-No more school shootings, simple solution.

More guns = less shootings, but the left just doesn't get that. They just have an irrational fear of guns.
