we should not have statues of Hitler either.... we can remember without putting statues of the evil people in centers of towns on a pedestal

these statues were erected to rewrite history, not remember it

What General Lee did was not absolutely wrong in the same sense as what Hitler did.

It's ironic that the very same people who are trying to tear down these statues would likely put up other statues of political figures who did not have entirely good life conduct and did some very questionable things.
I think there's obviously some double standards here. They will use arguments to try to tear down these statues, but those same sort of arguments are not going to be there when it comes to statues of other past historical figures with a different political orientation.

Should we tear down the statue of Martin Luther King because he blatantly cheated on his wife? See how ridiculous that is?

People are products of their time. If you were living in the south during the civil war, you would have likely been fighting for the confederates, and those living in the north would be fighting for the Union. General Lee was an honorable man, and probably one of, if not the best general our country has ever had.

It's a tragedy that we allow the woke left to erase our history and replace it with their imaginary illusions of self-righteousness. I will say the same for Andrew Jackson as well. He was one of our finest presidents and finest generals our country has ever had. Both should be permanently honored with the statues created for them. Everything in context, everything in perspective.

yeah, but we do not need to put them on a pedestal and let those in the south think that is something great

The Confederate States were fighting for independence, not to overthrow the United State government. Lincoln invaded those states with a military hellbent on it's destruction and the citizens of those states defended themselves from that invasion many giving the ultimate sacrifice. Those states honor those sons a daughters of our states and the leaders of that defense against overwhelming force.

All the Confederate States wanted was to live in peace with the United States and President Lincoln. Continue trade and commerece.

I'm not promoting anything. It seems you might be promoting authoritarian rule.

The War Between the States. The War of Northern Aggression. Lincoln's War. When the United States invaded the Confederacy in order to cause massive death and destruction and removal of a government chosen by the PEOPLE.

We want to promote history, in the times and context in which it was played out. Not in the current times of the woke left, as they wallow in their imaginary self-righteousness.

the Confederate statues were erected long after the civil was to rewrite history

if you want to be reminded everyday on the way to work of the evils of slavery, we can have much better statues, ones the kkk won't worship

I think the question of that was settled with over 600,000 lives lost. But then what I recall recently is the left talking about California doing it had what a great thing it would be. What if California did it. What would Biden do?

I believe the exact quote is "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Regarding the Civil War, I presume that would mean remembering how people may be misled for lost causes...i.e. the preservation of slavery...and NOT for the glorification of military and political leaders who led hundreds of thousands of Confederate soldiers to their deaths, by putting their statutes in parks.

It's not just people in the South who honored those who led the defense against a ruthless invasion by an overwhelming force.

“Lee was the noblest American who had ever lived and one of the greatest commanders known to the annals of war.”
    Sir Winston Churchill

I'll certainly go with his opinion over yours.

Virginia will be a very sorry state over removing statues.
I was at Monticello but never went into Charlottesville inside the city to see much of it. I however also was in Richmond where that magnificent statue of Robert E Lee (the same man who hung the traitor John Brown, so celebrated by today's Democrats) stands for the moment. That statue harms nobody.

America has it's own version of the Taliban destroying images because they don't like them.

It was never a civil war. Lee and Davis never had any intentions of taking over the North and wrapping it up in the confederacy.

Yep the Confederate States of America never wanted a war with the United States they wanted to avoid a war. They gave fair warning that if Lincoln insisted on war they would defend themselves but they wanted nothing more than a normalization of relations and trade and commerce and everyone live in peace.

Hitler was not an American by miles of sea water.

Due to Lincoln, this country lost over 630,000 lives all fighting for freedom.
The north fought to keep the South slaves.
The South fought to remain free.
