Firstly, no I don't have kids. Secondly, you still don't answer the question - do you think Google's communication with children breaks some agreement with the parents? The broader point is indeed a difficult one but frankly I think you raise it to try to avoid answering the question. Nevertheless, if you think spying on your kids in their teenaged years is going to help you raise them well, I honestly hope for the sake of your relationship with them that you think seriously of the broader possible ramifications of doing that, especially what it would do to their trust of you if they found out.

My kids already know I am monitoring them. Google just verifies it. Not that I am in favor of usurping parental authority, but be clear, the parents should have control of their child's online activities and the rules should be clear.

Didn't read whole thread. If anyone has coined the term, "Google Youth" and all that implies, I apologize for my lack of originality.

Im sure clicking "I agree" covers this. As far as my parenting, I used key logger and screen capture software to monitor their internet activity. First, we talk about what is expected, then I get to see if more talks are needed. When they ask if they can go hang out at a friends house, I can say "yes" and trust they will use good judgement.

Generally speaking, "kids" and "good judgement" are contradictory terms.

I could tell you stories ...

Well if clicking 'I agree' covers it, then what's your complaint about google's policy? As with everyone else who has been specific here, you let your kids know what you're doing, which is great and in which case google's notification to the kid should be irrelevant. It's the secret monitoring that seems to me an unhealthy thing to want to do as a parent. OK, fine the first time they're in a new situation to keep an eye out for them, but as an ongoing thing when the child has the feeling of privacy? I think that is only likely to store up problems for later. But, to agree with an earlier point, yes, it's very easy to tell people how to raise kids when you don't have any.

It's funny when you say I'm grasping at relevancy when you made the claim google is indoctrinating our children. You seem to go off on a tangent because you have a pre-conceived notion concerning google. You say that the bigger issue is blank but you keep harping about google undermining the authority of parents but fail to demonstrate how this undermines authority. If anything, google parental lock empowers the parents because it allows them to control the content their children view, but you say they are impeding the family unit. Is google protection better or worse than not allowing the parents to restrict content?

Probably so parents won't know what kind of porn their little ones are starting to get into.

Are... Are you comparing drug dealers being investigated by policing authorities to children using their parents computers?

    Really?

Your 7 year old is facing temptation outside is what to do with Google searches?? Why do you want to watch your children without them knowing? I would have hoped that you actually talk to them about what is right or what is wrong and not be angry that Google reminds children that their parents might be monitoring their searches which is nothing to do with going out with friends when they are much older

I didn't miss anything. You seem to be dancing around the issue rather than confronting it. You fail to make a connection as to how google indoctrinated our children in this situation and won't address whether or not Google parental control gives broader authority to parents when they use this feature.

Good judgement often comes from bad judgement!

I am not complaining; its a discussion. It is when they know they are being watch they will hide and store up problems for later. Circumventing the responsible adult by sending this message to the minor is an overreach on their part.

Google is a private company. It can do what it wants. Don't like it? Don't use it.

First, I am not angry; its just a discussion. The psychology is simple. The same way people suddenly drive the speed limit and use turn signals when they see a police car behind them, children alter their behavior when parents are looking. After all the talks, the true test is when they believe no one is looking.

They have a new device where all you have to do is say "Hey Google, raise my kids!"

Not possible in some situations.. Especially if the interface they/education/Gov/business requires gmail, google's gotomeeting, google workspace and the list goes on.. Clearly many folks are behind the curve on this, it's really surprising to me actually this far down the internet road

That's a good thing right? That means children won't be doing bad things when they know their parents are watching.

Not so easy when they have big government contracts. Many students are issued a Chrome book for school. I do like how homework is submitted online and dogs can no longer eat it!

You are not really as saavy as you think you are when you don't realize parents can simply change the gmail password so their child doesn't have access to this notification if preferred.
