That certainly proves that some people have no business near any sort of reloading equipment.

Probably be one of the first to pour smokeless powder down a muzzleloader. Lol

Our op would probably be mortified to realize how precise locksmiths and clocksmiths are compared to gunsmiths.

Anyone that can make keys and locks and clocks can also make Glocks

on my Dillon 1050 I cranked out 200 9mm round this morning in under a half hour. Now I cheated in the sense these were already primed cases.

But since they already had a primer you didn't even have to bother with putting any gunpowder in them according to the op because the primer is what propels the bullet...lol

It seems the anti-gun crowd through ignorance (meaning they know little about guns of their manufacture) want to define an assault weapon as any long firearm that can shoot rapidly.
The record on bolt-action shooting comes from a European contest, the last winner hit an 18" target at 200 meters 39 times in 60 seconds. Must be an assault rifle.
Is it easy to make an assault rifle, or any rifle? Yes, and no. The more precision you require, the more difficult the job is. But in terms of the criminal element, precision is low on the list, so it gets easier.
I will grant that a total novice would have a hard time building a weapon that worked as well as the AR, but again- precision is not as critical as you might think. An AK-47, the Russian army standard has been around a long time. Soldiers could tell when enemies were using them, because they rattled when fired; the parts were that loosely fit, and most stamped out of sheet metal.

Your statement "And the screws to hold them together have to be nanometrically accurate." is interesting.
Here's a posted article on a guy who built a gun and made a profit by turning it to the anti-gun campaign in his area:

"A slam fire shotgun. All you need is:

If you want it to be legal the 3/4” pipe needs to be 18 inches or longer since it’s the barrel. The overall length needs to be 26” or longer. I didn’t want to build a stock so I simply used a 30” barrel pipe which was both longer than 18” for the barrel and made the entire length more than 30” so it was good for the overall 26”. If you make it stock less you may want a longer 1” pipe. I got a 1” x 30” pipe and had the guy at Home Depot cut it in half so I had two 15” receivers. The only tool you need is a file that’s long enough to remove the seam in the 1” pipe if it has one. Use epoxy to glue the BB into the center of the washer and then that into the end of the pipe cap and that makes the firing pin. If you do it right all you need to do is put a 12 gauge shell in the barrel. Then slide it into the 1” pipe and slam the 2 pipes together and the shell will hit the bb striking the primer. This gun can also be taken apart making it just 2 pipes and a pipe cap. The cap is the only piece that looks modified so it’s easy to hide it Incase guns became or are illegal where you are. You can also add a bayonet to it simply take a small pipe and weld a knife or sword to it and screw it onto the end of the 3/4” pipe after you fire your 1 shot take the 1” pipe off and you have a short spear."

The above is obviously as crude as it gets, but will still work- but the level of skill and tools needed to build it are no more sophisticated than the gun.

If a criminal enterprise like a gang wanted to build their own weapons, the task is not at all intimidating. All that has to happen to make that a desirable choice is to make it more profitable. Same reason the cartels have factories making their own drugs, totally uncontrolled. We made it profitable by imposing restrictions that only limited law-abiding people.

For about three hundred dollars you could probably get a crate of AKs from Africa if you can afford to furnish your own Transportation.
Not to mention which you can order everything piece meal it might cost a bit more, but you can do it over time.

It appears as though you have others do your research for you? It does not take an "expert" to know the simple physics behind using pressure to propel a projectile. It also appears as though you believe that making hundreds of rounds as a show stopper. That is far from correct.

For less than $5000 I could buy all the machinery necessary to build whatever my heart could possibly desire.

Just because doing so requires skill, does not mean acquiring that skill is hard.

Do you think firearms are accessible, inexpensive, and popular because they are so difficult to make? Do you think Mikhail Kalashnikov's design is so popular in second and third world countries because of the level of skill required to produce one?

Yeah. It's sheet metal, some wood and a pipe.

It may be a mission to Mars for the skinny jean wearing Starbucks crowd, but it only takes a few midwest farmers with a barn, a press brake, and maybe a lathe to make enough to supply a small banana republic.

True, never underestimate the "handiness" of a Farmer; I grew up at the head of the creek; I know. But don't think for a minute there aren't very capable city folk that could build a functioning firearm out crap from their scrap pile AND, have the tools to do it. Firearms are designed to be "easily" mass produced and to keep running after being beat around and drug through the mud. The tolerances are no where near as precise as ... a machine that can build a computer board ... as an example.

I believe the OP can be destroyed with the answer to one simple question....

    What is an 'assault rifle'.

Give me a working definition and I will show you just how easy it is to build one.

Yep! Killing people is a great business. I don't know how many would be put out of business, but funerary homes, hospitals, ... and, of course, gun manufacturers and gun shops. The latter of which there is one here in my city ....like every few blocks.

I don't foresee a new generation of IT mass murderers will become a great concern any time soon.

That many will find an IT specialist who is willing to provide them with guns and ammunition is not a major concern.

Irrelevant, given I have said nothing about confiscating (but I HAVE said exactly the opposite)

One thing I have learned in these discussions is to differentiate between people on the pro-gun side that know about guns, vs those that only SAY they know about guns but don't know squat! Even though knowing about guns is not required to debate gun policy, they both use this type of arguments. But now I don't have to waste my time with the latter.

In your case I already knew I could trust that anything you say is incorrect even before doing any research. But it's always good to confirm

I am interested to know if the OP thinks the firearms that already exist, some 435 million that the government knows about, and probably that many or more that they don't know about, are supposed to age out after his ban?

I had guns in my safe that had been in my family for generations... before the tragic boating accident, that is. They all worked just like brand new.

I would definitely prefer one of these nuts trying to stage a mass shooting with a shotgun made with duck tape than with an assault rifle and thousands of rounds of ammunition they bought from the corner gun store. I wouldn't expect him to live long enough to even engage the police before the thing blows up in their face and kills them.

    You have proven my point.

Being obtuse isn't the same as cleaver. The way your op reads you seem to be suggesting of eliminating ALL means of putting together an "assault weapon" which you refuse to define. If you're going to eliminate all means of creating an assault weapon, for which you haven't a definition, you're going to put a lot of machine shops, foundry's and other vital business's that keep America running out of business.
You might be surprised what I can do with a mill and a lathe. But, that wasn't my point. My point was I worked with 30 to 40 men that were expert at creating metal parts to tolerances far more precise than are needed to create any rifle. AND, they very definitely could produce a very functional weapon ... in their spare time.
It sure is "relevant"; people here have replied how easy it is to turn out ammunition, how else are you going to stop it's availability without confiscating it. I can't seem to find anywhere, where you've suggested making ammo more available; which would actually be the "opposite".

One of my father's first lessons was, "don't underestimate" your opponent. Just because it suits your paradigm to discount homemade firearms, in practice it would be a huge mistake.
This thread of yours proves you're point only, if you're trying to prove you know nothing about firearms or how to solve OUR gun violence problem.

Provide evidence primers are what propel the bullet. Your above source confirms the primer ignites the CHARGE that PROPELS the bullet.

A cartridge with just a primer would result in a bullet lodged in the barrel just past the chamber. This is referred to as a squib load amongst re-loaders.

Your above claim is analogous to claiming a spark or heat generating resistance in a wire propels a rocket into orbit. It’s patently absurd.

Clearly you need an education. Here is some.

    https://www.hunter-ed.com/pennsylvania/studyGuide/How-the-Rifle-and-Handgun-Fire/20103901_88408/

What’s so funny is you think your unsubstantiated opinions matter. And when you attempt to substantiate a claim it ends up supporting my counterclaim.

Don't count on it. Assuming they are "criminals" and not "manic suicides", it's a fair guess they WILL take care of the tools of their trade. Most "manic-suicides" use new weapons and only need them to work for one encounter or until they stop, after that they are hoping they will be killed or at least imprisoned.

Let's spin this up leftist style!

Let's get the gun out of "gun violence" and just call it violence. I'm not convinced we all know that guns are inanimate objects and cannot be violent.

And now we must shame Noone for calling it "gun violence". :)
