my very white skin is a horrible liability.

It's definitely blue eyes. My eyes can get sensitive to the sun sometimes too, and I get a headache if I'm out in the sun for too long. That is also probably because I'm not used to it because I live in New England. Lol.

It is not wrong to stereotype. It is wrong to make discriminatory judgements based on stereotypes. "I won't rent an apartment to Irish people because they drink too much".

It may be that Irish people drink more, it's not such a unfathomable thing considering the cultural reputation. I wonder if they truly do drink more but it's possible.

Stereotyping is part of what makes the human mind function efficiently. We categorize things based on types. We do have a responsibility when making decisions to not treat someone unfairly based on natural, biases that occur in our thinking.

Having these biases is not racist. Being racist is refusing to acknowledge the bias and then acting in a way that promotes some "races" as being superior or inferior to others.

The entire concept of races is a pretty inaccurate way to classify groups of people anyway but the term has become part of everyday conversation. For example "Irish" is a nationality, not a race.

It tends to drop traits that aren't necessary to survival.

Look at what it's doing to IQs :D

Race is something that people perceive and believe in on a superficial basis. As subjective and unscientific as the notion is, it is still "real" in the minds of many, and so they act on it regardless.

ChrisL, I know we don't get along very well lately but can we please burry the tomahawk of war already?

Well, it is real. Some ethnic groups or races are more prone to certain types of diseases, for instance. Such as sickle cell anemia which affects African Americans much more often than white people. There are differences in body structure, bone structure, etc. How do you think the medical examiner determines the ethnicity of a deceased person where the flesh has decayed?

There are differences based on where our ancestors evolved, etc. Of course, even innocent children notice different races with no "malicious" intent. Like the first time my son saw a black man, he was a bit surprised but I just laughed and told him that he's a black man but just a man with a different skin color. Was I to tell him he was imagining things?

That, I think, describes the basis for our concept of race. I say it's superficial because it's based on what we perceive outwardly - skin color, facial features, etc. We tend to group different people, even different ethnic groups, together into one "race" on that basis. Yes, there are subtle genetic differences that make one group more or less prone to certain diseases or disorders, more or less able to digest certain foods, such as lactose, and so on. I think these statistical differences manifest themselves at all levels, whether we're talking about race groupings, ethnic groups or even individual families, since families do have their own set of peculiarities. Yet, despite these differences, we're all one species from a scientific standpoint, because our similarities far outweigh our differences.

I don't know really know what you mean but I don't have any hard feelings. Do I get heated about some topics? Sometimes but that doesn't mean that I am angry for a long time or anything like that.

I do wear sunglasses and try to wear sunscreen when I remember. I can tan well, but I can also burn easily, so I have to be careful about how much time I spend in the sun. I sometimes will wear a hat, but most of the time I don't, but I probably should because it would probably help with preventing a headache. Because my hair is dark, it gets really HOT in the sun.

Lol! True. What about how everything we have is remote control? Why should we have to get up to do anything at all? Aside from too much junk food, that is another reason why humans are getting so "large."

If I used peroxide in my hair, it would turn red. Lol. I have a LOT of red highlights in my hair and the red in my hair is stubborn. When I did have my hair colored blonde, they first had to strip the color out of my hair because you can't dye a darker color lighter. I'll bet a lot of you guys didn't know that, huh? It would take HOURS at the salon and was expensive and definitely the results were not worth the money or the time.

the best way to do that is in a comparative statistic rather than a conclusionary statement that may be based on either a stat or stereotype or both. You don't claim that young black men are thuggish animals. You assert that the incarceration rate of black males was over six times higher than that of white males. Then we can debate the meaning of that statistic, outside a stereotype.

Besides, everyone has blonde hair nowadays. At least here in America. I'm happy with my natural hair color and just being me, thank you very much. ;)

I find it funny that so many people, or at least women, seem to hate their hair color and want to change it. I don't know what makes them so self-conscious and unhappy with their own appearance!

Not me! I love my hair! I started using some new hair care products, and my hair has never been more soft and shiny and smelling great too! :D I do wish I was a little more tan in my skin color though. I just think skin looks a little better with some color on it. Lol.

I'd be down with being more tan and less fat. I've got to get out of this place to a better environment, methinks. I'm not anxious to spend money and go to a gym, and would never opt to go lie in a tanning booth.

Lol! My ex didn't like to say "cocktail sauce." He couldn't seem to ask for cocktail sauce without laughing about it like a 12-year-old.
