Pretty colors. Broad brush statements are usually the sign of an ideologue. In general, when we speak of black racial issues in the US we are talking about African Americans which is a specific culture. Other blacks; Haitians, Nigerians, Brazilians, etc. come from different ethnic backgrounds and their cultures are different. You can't look at skin color and divine their ethnicity. I am surprised you are unaware of that considering your "liberal" past.
Funny how racism always dominants American conversation. The truth is, America is the least racist nation in the world. Name me one minority social group in America that is better off living in another country and less racist. I have always looked at humans like I look at dogs. I prefer hound breeds and short haired dogs over the larger hairy breeds. I don't like pit bulls or Doberman's or aggressive dogs like chows. When I see the dog show's I would never vote for the sissy dogs like Afghans or Collies. I fully understand why different groups of people are inclined to want to live among the same type of people as themselves. There are other segments of society that are attracted to another group and not to others. Even among our own breed there can be attractions. My dream girl has always been a thin dark redhead with green eyes and a milky skin. Apparently that wasn't in the cards as I wound up marrying three Brunets' and a blond.
I guess you could say that American whites are an ethnic group but an ethnic group must have a common culture and I think the commonality of "white" culture is very weak because there are so many subgroups. There are southern whites, New Englanders, WASPs, Italian Americans, Catholics, Jews, hipsters, west coasters and on and on making their commonality vague at best.
The census bureau reports that millions of "white" people identify themselves as American in ethnicity. These are people who either have no connection or no knowledge of their ethnicity. I would consider myself ethnically American since I have no attachment by custom to any other nation. My family has been in this country for centuries and don't identify with any other cultural tradition other than my American ones.
