And I'm fine with punishment. But not excessive punishment over what they would get elsewhere.

Spot on! Most people understand this. I am still surprised that any of these folks who trespassed would expect to be treated fairly. Just like the thousands upon thousands of people protesting that day probably expect a corrupt government to listen to them.

There are ranges for punishments given within the law. Nobody is suggesting those guidelines should be dismissed for harsher penalties.

Im seeing a lot of people that are. They want them thrown in prison for life. Montoya comes to mind. That is what I am railing against, not that they shouldn't be punished.

Life imprisonment seems unlikely, excepting the case of the man who killed the cop.

But for weapons possession, endangerment, conspiracy against the USA, trespassing on federal property, destruction of federal property, theft of federal property, assault and battery, etc, I can imagine the punishment for a number of crimes being rolled into a 20 year sentence.

Oh, and please rail some more. I like the entertainment value.

I'm here for you. 20 years is silly. Do some community service and pay a fine if they didn't directly hurt anyone.

I absolutely agree they should be held accountable. What they did was reprehensible and they should be prosecuted. Denying reasonable bail for this guy still overstates the threat however.

Including bare hands so anyone is a lethal threat and should never be allowed bail. I garantee more people have been killed by being punched than being tazed.

People who commit massive white collar crime don't hurt anyone per se, and yet, they also get up to 20 years.

I'm here for you too, and yes, I am just feeling the love.

Eh, I'm running out of steam on this topic. I just don't want to see people punished more for disrupting the lives of politicians than the lives of regular people. I don't like the double standard, no matter how "essential" they think their function is.

Do you think they should? Should drug dealers? Personally I think only violent criminals should get long prison sentences.

Pretty dishonest to change words of a quote to make the person sound bad. Not that you literally changed the words. But are using a word that was never ever said and making people angry over that quote.

She said protest that means protest. Actually the question was about protest.

The video of Harris speaking to Colbert is authentic, following her appearance on The Late Show in June. Colbert asks Harris, “How important is it for these protests to continue?” Harris responds that it is “critically important”, saying that some of the success achieved around criminal justice reforms would not have happened in recent years without Black Lives Matter ( here ).

We agree on that point. They shouldn't get more or less punishment than anyone would for specific crimes.

Start at the local level. Before partisan politics forces them to be corrupt.

I don't. Those disrupting lives of politicians should be punished more that disrupting lies of regular people.
Just like they are if they mess with cops.

It's called respecting the office(s), police, and country.

    I disagree on that.
I don't think they should be placed in some ivory tower. But their job to the public puts them at a much higher risk of danger than a normal private citizen.
Just for being a public figure.

No. Just making it out for what it acutally is.
    An attack on our democracy.
Trying to over throw the results of a legally run election for president of the USA.

we are going to have to agree to disagree on this. I refuse to respect the office of those responsible for dividing this country so badly. As far as I’m concerned, everyone in that capital building on both sides of the aisle are the root of all the problems we have in this country today. When they agree to give up their monopoly on power and set up a system with more than 2 parties, then they will start getting my respect. Until then, they do not deserve respect, as they are making problems, not fixing them.

I think we're on the same page. I was agreeing with @Josh77 that they shouldn't get more or less time SOLELY because their targets were public officials. Specifically, the violations for which they are being charged have penalties weighted for crimes against the government. It's similar to assault and battery being weighted differently if the victim is a police officer.
