I think you are underestimating the important fundamental difference. In the House, Schiff, a Dem Congressman was presiding in the Chair, and that is an ocean away from what will happen in the Senate with CJ of SCOTUS presiding in the Chair.

This is one of the very points of impeachment against Trump.
I was listening on the radio, and they had some legal expert say that the strongest case against Trump was his interference in requesting and directing potential witnesses to not testify in the House impeachment inquiry.

So now if the President's political rival likewise refuses to testify also, they could hardly make the case for impeachment on that, and then elect (or even just nominate) Biden without looking hypocritical.

Sort of a blatant double standard on display.
