Was that the USS Tang? I know the USS Tang sunk itself when a torp it launched veered off course and circled around the boat in smaller and smaller circles until it hit.

Edit -(*)(*)(*)(*), didn't see that someone else has already said Tang. :(

I am guessing American...though whether this is a combination of capital ships sunk or transports carrying troops or POW's I don't know.

For Americans this is a very difficult question. It is outside of our experience during WWII. It wasn't an American, Japanese, or German submarine that killed all those people at one time.

Are you saying this didn't happen during WW2, or that it is outside of what we normally think about for WW2?

And was it a direct action by the sub or an indirect action by the sub?

The action occurred during WWII. The action was direct. Torpedoes from one submarine.

Well blow me down....that leaves only a few really feasible countries- the UK, Italy- maybe Australia, France, the Netherlands.

I admit nothing coming to mind- but I am going to see if I can find it- its 1 p.m. right now....

1:03- took me 3 minutes- and I never guessed the right country.

    USSR

Had never heard about it before- sounds like the total is somewhat disputed but either way...wow.....

Lots of people in the world know about this event. Few of them are Americans. This hasn't been taught in school or covered by the media. And that's strange considering the magnitude of the mortality.

Yup. You and SFJEFF answered this one. Few Americans know this stuff. I think the Canadian education system has many things going for it.

I had to look it up- I love it. I will give others a chance in case they can answer without looking it up.

though the reference I saw it appears to have happened in WW1.

By the way- looking up the Egret, and finding the sinking of the Roma lead me to the guided missiles that I knew almost nothing about.

Which is why this stuff is fun!

Could be WWI, I'm not sure.

The scenario is as follows. A German U-boat sunk a merchant ship (carrying trucks among other things), and the U-boat was struck by a truck that fell off of the sinking ship...breaking it's back.

    Sunk by truck.

here is what I read- A German U-boat torpedoed a merchant ship carrying among other things ammunition and trucks- torpedo didn't sink it, so the captain surfaced to finish it off with the deck gun- ship exploded and sent a truck flying which hit the submarine- breaking its back.

Great story- not so much for the merchant ship or the submarine but wonderfully ironic.
