I sincerely hope that every entitled moron who works at mcdonalds and was protesting for $15 an hour to flip burgers gets replaced by one of these machines.

Eventually, technology will get to the point that machines will simply install themselves and perhaps even self-replicate like in the movies.

And at some point, no one will be able to work harder than the robots.
All that will be necessary to live will be some raw resources and a few machines.
At which point we'll all have a serious question we'll need to answer (if we haven't answered it already)
Do we want a system in which only the private owners of these machines and the raw resources can live,
or do we set it up so that the benefits of these machines and the raw natural resources flows down to everyone?

Increases in technology is a blessing, and everyone should understand that, but its also going to force us to face some hard truths sooner or latter.

Like any other technology that comes along, there will be things that become obsolete. I haven't seen anyone griping about putting blacksmiths out of work or atms coming along. Technology like this brings about companies that have to maintain, build, repair, inventory, deliver, etc. things for these machines. Instead of someone being paid to take an order, they will instead work for a company that takes order on parts, repairs, or other things.

The same thing happened to the grocery stores, Home Depot, and will continue. Gain some skills of you want to be paid more... don't force inflation on everyone else which will ultimately negate any artificial raise you have received from political idiots trying to buy your votes.

Actually, no, it wont stop,...it will continue, even if you cut back govnmt mandates, as the technology improves and becomes more affordable.
And I say this as someone who's not a big fan of the minimum wage.

Creative destruction. It sucks for those losing their jobs, but in the long run it's beneficial to society as a whole.

Solution is simple. Simply tie their pay directly to their performance.
Say things like, if you work x amount of hours and make < y number of mistakes, you get a promotion or pay increase.
Or, if you're more of a stick person, say that if you make > z number of mistakes, you get a demotion or pay decrease.
It would take some mechanism being implemented to track these and perhaps other performance metrics,
but it could certainly be done if one wanted to.

    Catch 22.

Lay off all the low wage workers and replace them with machines.

Who buys low priced fast food? Low wage workers.

    Machines don't need to eat.

when I was in europe... their kiosks (which they've had for like 2 years) had a phone app that worked with the in-store wifi... so I never had to stand in line at the kiosk, only if you forgot your phone or didn't want to download the app...

what some people don't realize, the kiosk/app does a better job than the average employee also, because employees are trained to ask if they want a dessert, or fries, or other add-ons they didn't order... you know the traditional up-selling... the apps actually increased up-selling nearly 11% in same-store sales for them... and at a time when mcdonalds is struggling as a brand, that helped them flatten numbers while american numbers declined steady once again...

many stock holders were pushing for the automated technology just to keeps profits from declining by reducing employee hours and increasing sales at the same time... so this actually has less to do with minimum wage... thats just a nifty side benefit should it ever happen nationally... expect to see other chains roll this out too...

Then stockholders shouldn't have a say in how someone runs his or her business. They aren't the people who employ these people to make a living. The stockholders cost us jobs in an effort to give them more money they don't need I say the stockholders should butt out of people's lively hood.

as a corporation, no.... but individual franchises may or may not be hurting, depending on any number of factors.

    http://www.businessinsider.com/what-it-costs-to-open-a-mcdonalds-2014-11

It's not the corporation that says, "you know, BFE needs another McDonalds on the corner of MLK Jr Blvd", lets interview an entire staff"

But if Ron McDonald buys all the franchise tags, McD's corporation will continue to get money so he can use the name. If Ron runs the business into the ground, it's his money lost, not McDonalds corporation.

But, there is a vested interest from the corporate offices that McD's is run efficiently, because if Ron goes out of business, that's less money coming in for using the name.

McD's corporation is not about to go out of business.... that doesn't mean Detroit McD's is not on the verge of closing their doors.

They'll find it significantly easier to automate the human out of the error process, realizing significant savings and improvements in customer service at the same time. But it'll hurt the ones who do a great job day in and day out. They're out there and I've seen quite a few, but unfortunately out on the East Coast there seem to be few.

Actually my dear Liberal friend, people just want to be served food. I don't care if you're a headless person, if you've got two arms and willing to give me food I'll gladly take it :D

I'd say a person should get paid by how much they contribute to a company's profits. Tying it strictly to the number of mistakes doesn't take into account factors such as efficiency. If someone produces a significantly greater output at a faster speed than a coworker, but makes slightly more mistakes should they be paid less? Also if an employee has a great personality that encourages repeat business they should get paid more, even if that friendliness isn't quantifiable.

Also, I don't think promotions should be tied to mistakes (or lack thereof). Just because someone can prepare burgers faster than another doesn't mean they will be able to run a store better; it just means they can prepare burgers faster. The two jobs require different skill sets.

Stockholders help to provide jobs to businesses. Without the equity they provide (along with no assurance of dividends), companies would be required to incur more debt if they needed capital from external sources, in which case the companies may decide to forego expansion, which would reduce employment.

    Friendly smile :roflol:

You have never been in one of our local McDonald's then.

Banks are heading this way too BTW. The business that do not do the EFT's at the register can buy scanners and just scan their check deposits into their account.

Yeah, when I was writing that, even though I put numbers, I was actually thinking percentages in my head.
And of course, you'd want there to be more than just one metric. Like you said, other metrics should be added depending on what it is
the company feels creates value for them, though as you mentioned, things like personality or friendliness might be a bit hard to quantify.

Stockholders are the OWNERS of companies. Why should they have no say?

Is it better than just charging $2.00 for a Hamburger Junior?

Agreed. Quantitative and qualitative factors should go into pay increases. With that said, since everything can't be quantified, it prevents a perfectly efficient way to decide an employee's wages. So that can lead to employees not being what they're actually worth, but to what they're perceived by management and ownership to be worth. Unfortunately, there is no way (at least that I've ever thought of) to fix this problem.

Why are McDonald's employees "biatches" for wanting more money?

I'll grant you that wage increases, especially to the tune of $15 an hour, are paving the way to their being replaced, but at most I would consider them just being short-sighted. They aren't the ones increasing wages. It's the politicians that are doing that. It seems to me the anger should be directed at them. Instead of helping to help the economy run smoothly, they're pandering for votes. They are the bad guys in this ordeal.
